

Mabel Louise Smith Zimmerman, 100, of Windsor Lane in Martinsville, died Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Blue Ridge Rehab Center. She was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on October 16, 1911 to Walter E. and Martha Louise Sprouse Smith. She was a 1928 National Honor Society graduate of E. C. Glass High School in Lynchburg and came to Martinsville in 1937. For several years, she was employed by Kingoffs Jewelers in Martinsville as bookkeeper/accountant. Later, she and her husband owned and operated Capital Store, Inc., located on Church Street in Martinsville and later on Main Street, from 1941 to the late seventies. They sold music (sheet music, records, etc), art supplies, tobacco products, cosmetics, patented medicine and also operated a soda fountain.
Mrs. Zimmerman was a long-time member of Broad Street Christian Church where she was formerly active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
George M. Zimmerman; three sisters, Ruby S. Bartenfelder, Thelma S. Harris and Annie S. Hamilton; two brothers, William Smith and Percy S. Smith.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonita Zimmerman and Jo Ann Z. Frost both of Martinsville; one son, George M. Zimmerman, Jr. of Goldsboro, NC; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville with the Rev. Clint Spivey officiating.
