

Mattie Harris Williams, 90, of Martinsville, died Friday, March 9, 2012 at Blue Ridge Rehab Center where she was a resident. She was born in Martinsville, March 4, 1922 to the late James Arthur and Bealie Holley Harris. She served in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps during WW II where she attained the rank of Sgt and received the American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WAAC Service Medal. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville and was also an Honorary Life Member of the Presbyterian Women.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John “Yankee” Williams; two sisters, Dora Cartee and Annie Pearson; two brothers, Robert and Albert Harris.
Surviving are two daughters, Vivian Ann Cole and husband Danny, Mary Bond-Potter and husband John, all of Martinsville; two brothers, Sam Harris of Martinsville and William “Bill” Harris of Collinsville; two grandchildren, Anne Paige Niemczyk and Austin “Tres” Bond; two step-grandchildren, Susan Willis and Melissa Potter; four step-great-grandchildren, Olivia and Adam Willis, Alyshia Potter and Kaylyn Martin.
The funeral will be held Monday, March 12, 2012 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville with the Rev. John Wiederholt officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park with military honors by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Sunday, March 11, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville and other times at the home of her daughter, Vivian Cole, 372 Owsley Drive, Martinsville, VA 24112.
