OBITUARY

Rebecca Lynn Woody Fitzgibbons

August 19, 1954February 22, 2019

Lynn Woody Fitzgibbons, age 64, died Friday, February 22 at her home. She was born August 19, 1954 to John and Rebecca Woody in Henderson, NC. Lynn grew up as a preacher’s kid and spent a lot of her time moving from place to place. She graduated from Bluefield College, Averett College and later received her master’s in education from Averett College. She worked for 43 years for Henry County Schools. She couldn’t go anywhere in Martinsville or surrounding areas without seeing someone she had in school - this always brought a smile to her face. She was a football mom and loved cheering on her son at his football games at Martinsville High School, and later at Washington and Lee University. Lynn loved spending time with her family and took the utmost pride in them. She is survived by her loving husband of 29 years, Thomas Patrick Fitzgibbons; a son, John Graham Fitzgibbons (Jessica) of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Linda Woody of Reidsville, NC; nieces Mary Taylor Setliff (Drew) of Winston-Salem, NC and Ann Hughes Braja (Misha) of Reidsville, NC; her pride and joy, grandson Graham William Fitzgibbons; great nephew and nieces, Harrison, Emmy and Caroline Setliff; and ‘adopted’ son, Christopher Eric Hall. The family would like to thank special friends, Jo and Jerri DeVault, and her “W & L Generals” football family. A memorial service for Lynn will be held at 11:00am on Monday, February 25, 2019 at Starling Avenue Baptist Church with the Reverend Vicki Brodie Tamer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the SPCA in Lynn’s memory. Arrangements are by Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville.

Mr Fitzgibbons and Family,
I am so truly sorry for your loss! Mrs. Fitzgibbons was a true angel on earth and helped so many young people to find their way in life. She will be truly missed but her life should be celebrated by those that she touched! Wonderful lady and friend to many! Most of the students remember her as Mrs Fitz and I can't help but to smile at the memories of her cracking down on certain student (deservingly so) but in her way of doing so as a teaching lesson and not so much of a stern message. Mrs Fitz was one of my best memories of my school days. I just hope I used proper spelling and punctuation in writing this as I can see her now having that grin, proof reading this...You will be greatly missed Mrs Fitz!

I just wanted to say how much i loved Mrs. Fitzgibbons! I would say she was kind of like a mother figure towards me. My actual mom (Brenda Wright) loves her just the same and feels the same way i do. My mom and i both truly appreciate everything Mrs. Fitzgibbons did for me. I was a troubled teen for a while, being a little rebellious at times. But she finally got me in control and acting like i should. My mom spoke with her on several occasions, and my mom knows she didn't have to, but she treated me like her own kid almost, as i'm sure she did all of her students at Magna Vista. She helped turn my life around and in the direction i needed to be. She was a great principle at Magna Vista and a great mentor for me. I wasn't able to attend her funeral services as i have health problems, i wish i could have made it to tell her family how much she did for me and how much i loved and appreciated everything she did for me. If it wasn't for her i don't know how my life would have turned out. I will always remember you Mrs. Fitzgibbons and always remember everything you did for me. Thank You So Much!!!

Tom, John, and Family,
I was so saddened to hear of Lynn's passing. I was at the funeral; however, I didn't get a chance to speak to the family as there were SO many people there whose lives both you and Lynn touched. I remember your wedding vividly- it was the first wedding I had attended. My parents, Joyce and Jim, (Young) thought the world of both you and Lynn. I remember when John Graham was born- he was the first "real" baby I had ever held. Ironically, I was thinking of that the other day as I rocked my baby boy to sleep. You guys were the loves of her lives. I remember my dad picking me up at Ridgeway Elementary and bringing me back to Magna Vista. I followed Lynn everywhere. I was in awe of her and how great an administrator she was. She was so cool. There will never be another like her- she was the best. My love and prayers are with you all now and in the coming days. With love, Jessica "Young" Nigh
