Shirley Hyatt Flippin, 71, of Spencer, passed away Monday, February 19, 2018 in Roanoke. She was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, February 23, 1946 to Wesley Hyatt and Ella Lacy Hyatt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Virginia Gaude, Mildred Vincent and Kay Blackmon; and a brother, Herman Hyatt.
Shirley was a very active member of Old Well Christian Church where she served on the church Board, the Christian Women’s Fellowship and formerly taught Christian Youth Fellowship for many years. She was also an active member and volunteer for the Spencer Penn Centre and the American Cancer Society.
She is survived by her husband, Walter L. Flippin; one daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Jamie Burris; one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Janice Flippin; 3 grandchildren, Holly Flippin, Adam and Delaney Burris and a sister, Bobbie Mendenhall.
The family will receive friends, Thursday, February 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Old Well Christian Church. The funeral service will be held at Old Well Christian Church, Friday, February 23, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Tim Mills officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
