

Wilbert Randolph Haley, 85, of Axton, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. He was born in Draper, NC on November 29, 1928 to Lafayette Pleasant Haley and Leanora Willis Haley. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers; Ernest, Aubrey, and Lewis Haley, and his sister Hazel H. Lawrey.
After graduating from Axton High School, Wilbert was a self- employed mechanic. Later he worked at Stone Container and retired after 26 years of service as a service technician in the maintenance department. He was a big supporter of his community having served in the Axton Fire Department and on the board for the Axton Life Saving Crew for many years.
He was also very active in his Church, Mount Vernon Baptist Church of Axton, having served as Director of the Baptist Men, as a Deacon, Sunday School Secretary, Trustee, and as a member of various committees.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Vera McGuire Haley; one daughter, Melody H. Wilson and husband, Melvin, of Bassett; and two granddaughters, Brandi and Amber Garrett, of Axton.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with Reverend Michael Jordan and Reverend George T. Agnew officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are: Bobby Haley, Donald Haley, Randy Haley, Wayne Harris, Allen Herndon, Bobby Herndon, Johnny Herndon and Jimmy McGuire.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville and other times at the home.
