From mommy:

Arek William Gustafson was born on June 3, 2014 and at 6 ¾ years old he gained his angel wings on March 22, 2021. Arek was surround by his momma, daddy, close family and hero friends/neighbors.

Arek loves life and lives everyday to it’s fullest. He’s smart beyond his age, witty, has an incredible sense of humor. If you had the honor of knowing or meeting Arek, you knew you were beyond lucky. He cares about everyone and wanted the best for everyone, especially his “baby” brother Ivan.

His days were filled with his “special people” from his momma and daddy, big brothers Ethan and Owen, little brother Ivan, Ms. Shelli and his daycare family and his 1st grade virtual family at Steele Elementary. Stays with Pop and Grandma, visits with cousins, looking forward to Grandma Goul’s special surprises, “talking it up” with Grandpa Terry, neighborhood friends who he had the best bicycle rides and good conversation with.

We all admired Arek-each day was packed with all the things he loved as of course there is no time to waste. You might hear Arek ripping on the dirt bike trails with his KTM 50, swinging and singing on the playset, jumping on the trampoline, making multiple trips out to the barn to ride his bicycle, “borrowing” a few tools from daddy to build a special invention, watching hours of YouTube (even when momma and daddy reminded him that he had probably had too much) to figure out how to build his next lego creation or what is the fastest remote control car you can buy since daddy made a promise for good grades.

We will miss all of him—his beaming smile, his night time tuck ins and him deciding who he wanted (and us both secretly hoping we would be the one to tuck him in), bath time with Ivan, daddy’s barn buddy, Momma’s Biggby and magic milk on the weekends, sledding with his big brother Owen, playing commando with Ethan, wrestling with little brother Ivan, morel mushroom hunting with mommy, camping and trail rides and treating ourselves to crab legs per Arek’s request.

I will never forget him saying “no momma, I love you more” when I would tuck him in at night, I now know that he can see just how far and wide I love him.

When you ask Arek what superpower he would like to have he would say “to control the Earth.” You better get ready, cause I think we are in for a ride.

From daddy:

Arek Gustafson

My hero

Arek is a truly fun loving boy! He loved school, Arek was in first grade at Steele elementary and his teacher, Amanda DeMott was a hero to him. Arek spent his days with some amazing people his grandma Cindy, his buddy and daycare provider Shelli Riley and the greatest teachers. School was not a chore, he loved it, but when Arek was done for the day he was ready to play! Arek “Lived Life”!

He loved to go extreme sledding and play in the snow, most often with his bigger brother Owen. Arek had a gift and a passion for building and creating things in the shop with help from mommy and daddy. Arek’s big brother Ethan had all the cool stuff and they would play commandos and have sword fights. Arek is his little brother Ivan‘s protector and best buddy. They would wrestle and play trucks all the time!

Arek is a passionate boy, whenever he finds something that he enjoys he gives it 110%! He loves to play Nerf, create things with Legos, learn from YouTube, RC cars, camping and probably the most… Dirt bikes. Arek started riding when he was two years old against all of his grandmothers better judgment. Over the years he had several riding buddies. First daddy, then mommy, then Justin… His big brothers and many more.

His passion for all of these things, of course, had to include the gear! The coolest and most colorful riding gear, the biggest batteries for RC cars and his ranger… He “YouTubed“ how to convert his power wheel to 24 V and with daddy‘s help he did it… Mods are very important!!

Arek likes, no… Loves pranks! Like safety pinning all of daddies undies together or putting tape in your shoes when you weren’t around. He likes to sweetly pick on mommy and daddy about who gets to tuck him in. “Ummmmm mommy… No, daddy”! Then giggles but reassure you that if you lost you could do it tomorrow.

Arek will be missed and remembered always.

His family and friends who are left to keep telling Arek the Incredible stories is his momma and daddy, Tamah and Matt Gustafson; his brothers, Ethan, Owen, Ivan; grandparents Roger "Pop" and Cindy Gustafson, Terry and Lana Goul, Lorraine Goul and Tim Little, Sonny and Linda Abbott, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him very much. He will be missed every single day by all who loved him.

A visitation will be held on Friday April 2, 2021 from 4 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday April 3, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the family home, 1234 Christian Way, Mason, MI 48854.

Arek's funeral service will follow the visitation on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the family home.

Burial will take place after the service at Maple Grove, Mason, MI.

Arek's family asks that all who are attending to please dress in comfortable, colorful clothing. Arek loved wearing sweat pants and bright colors.

The day I met Arek he just stole my heart. He was shy at first, but it didn’t take long for him to open up to me and and we’d play together for hours. He was the kindest little boy I knew. He had such a big heart and I remember one time he said he wanted to tell me something and I said okay and then he whispered in my ear that he loved me and then he started giggling. I loved his laugh and how he was such a joy to be around. I remember last Christmas we went over to his house and he got this really cool Lego set. I helped him put it together for 2 hours. He was so excited about it and I was so happy to be able to help him with it. Every time I got to see him I was just so excited to play with him and to be able to see him smile. Arek was such a special boy to me and I will miss him so much. Thank you Tamah and Matt for welcoming me into your family and allowing me to become close with your amazing, bright, funny, and sweet boy.

We have so many great memories of Arek the Incredible! Our family is so thankful that we have had the privilege of knowing Arek over the past 6 3/4 years at daycare, school, boy scouts, birthday parties, and so much more! Arek, had a calming presence, positive attitude, zest for life, and a smile that could light up the room. Jack, found friendship in Arek that only a best friend could ask for and Arek looked out for William like a big brother. It was so fun to watch the boys laugh and have fun together. When we would arrive at Shelli's house in the morning, both Jack and Will would look for Arek's Minecraft back pack and go running downstairs to start their day. Often times when we would arrive together William would wait for Arek to get out of the truck, grab his hand, and say, "Hi Arek, You're my best friend," and Arek would laugh and say, "Come on, Will!" When the day was over, the boys would tell Arek stories of what they did that day all the way home, and during dinner. We learned his favorite color was red, his middle name was William, he liked Minecraft, Spiderman forever, LOVED dirt bikes, and was a master of Legos. We also heard stories of looking for bugs in the back yard, and only things boys would find funny! Just last month Jack asked for a play date with Arek, and he was so excited to have him over to our house. I will forever remember Arek wanting to play with the robotic Legos and when I asked him if he was going to be an Engineer without skipping a beat he responded, " Nope, a You tuber!" I will also hold dear how he pranked me with the farting robot, giggled when I put Sweedish fish in his popcorn, and how embarrassed Jack was when I broke out the Gangnam style dance and the Floss.....although Arek laughed and showed me how it was really supposed to be done! Arek, you will forever live in our hearts.

Matt and Tamah, we are here for you always, and thank you for sharing Arek with us!

Love, PJ, Sara, Jack and Will

Arek was such a kind and fun loving young man. He was raised by some of the best parents who taught him to be respectful and have manners at such a young age and I will always admire how well he carried himself. Every day for him was an adventure and I enjoyed being around him every chance I got. A great memory I have of him that I will never forget was when he was giving my girlfriend Amay and I a tour of the garden at his house in the backyard last summer. I was surprised how knowledgeable he was of all the different plants at such a young age. We then started talking about what veggies he liked and didn’t, but out of the multiple plants there, he only pointed out one or two that he didn’t like. As I told him that I wasn’t the biggest fan of tomatoes, within a split second he picked one up off the ground and took a big bite out of it as if it was an apple. Arek carried on as if it was normal, but if you knew Arek, he was always full of surprises. I know he is protected in Heaven by the Lord and will be right there with us in every moment of our lives. I love you buddy!

Matt, Tamah, and Family,
We are so saddened to here of Arek's passing. I could tell by his personality that he tried his best at everything. I will always remember the intensity in his eyes playing offense and defense in soccer. I also remember him telling Doug that he wanted us to pronounce his name as Are-k like Arc I believe. When I looked at you Matt, you just shrugged! He's a great kid and will be forever in our hearts!
We have kept you guys in our prayers every night and will continue to do so. We are so very sorry for your loss!

Dear sweet Arek,
The love and joy that you brought to this world will never be forgotten. I remember when you were still in your mommy’s belly- and how excited we all were for this perfect, little miracle! And you always were just that- a perfect little miracle! Always smiling and full of energy! Oh I loved to see that smile on FaceTime (even if it was while you were jumping on the couch!) and the pictures and videos that your mom and dad would post. You sure were easy to love!

It was so much fun to watch your brave dirt bike adventures- such a fearless little warrior. I was hoping I’d get to see you in your element one day. And yet, you were also so incredibly sweet and gentle with mommy and with baby Ivan. I remember sitting by the pool while we were away for Maren’s wedding, and your mommy called you to say goodnight...I’m not sure I’ll ever again hear such a darling goodnight kiss and the way you said “I love you” and meant it with your whole big heart. You certainly were incredible, Arek. Thank you for reminding us to be bold and live life to the fullest! But also to be kind and gentle and to always say “I love you”.

My name is Mattie, I worked with Arek when he was at the Harvey Center. Arek always had an amazing smile. Even if he was having a pretty rough day he would be in a great mood. He could bring a smile to anyone’s face. If you needed a buddy, Arek was your guy! He always included everyone. He was the most unselfish kid. I’m convinced that kid could move mountains. I’ll miss that sweet hearted guy. He was pretty incredible. To Arek... I hope you’re flying high. I hope you’re dancing in the sky, as well as watching over your family who loves you dearly. You was greatly loved by many people! You have so many friends that miss you already, including me. Never stop being you! I can’t wait to meet you again one day buddy. I hope you have all kinds of new stories to share. Promise to save me a hug, ok? This isn’t goodbye. See you again Arek <3 love bunches, Ms. Mattie

Arek always brought me so much joy. It was impossible to feel anything other than love and happiness around him. From the moment when I first met him I knew that we were going to be so close. He was always the first that I would go to at any gathering. It’s not going to be the same without him, and there won’t be a day that will go by that I won’t think about him. My best friend, forever and always.
