Born June 3, 1921, passed away March 13, 2010. If a person’s wealth is measured by the love of family and friends, Arlene was a very rich woman. Arlene was everybody’s mother, grandmother, and friend. Mom was a caring and compassionate woman who enjoyed baking cookies with her granddaughter, watching her grandson wrestle, and giving time to others. Mom was born in Mason and married George on St. Patrick’s Day, 1944. Her days were filled with being a homemaker on the farm, cooking huge meals and desserts for the family and hired hands while raising four children. She worked at the Mason Courthouse, Mason General, and Sparrow Hospital. She always gave of herself; nursing Dad when he was sick of cancer, volunteering at blood drives, meals on wheels, and Kiwanis. To know mom is to know love. Don’t cry for her; be thankful you had her in your life and pass along her love to others. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Helbig, Sr.; brothers Grover, Joseph and Russell Akers; sister Bernice Akers; brothers Seldon and James Stone. Surviving is her son, George (Beverly) Helbig; daughter Lorna Walters; daughter, Carolyn Cooper; son, David (Leesa) Helbig; granddaughter, Brianna (Tom); Grandson, LJ; brother, Leo Stone; sister, Ila Mae Lecato; sister-in-laws, Marlene, Maxine, and Ruth Akers. A Celebration of Arlene’s life will be held Wednesday March 17, at 2:30 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 621 S. Jefferson St., Mason, MI. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 16, from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Brianna and LJ Helbig College fund at Dart National Bank 368 W.
