Betty Lou Hicks was born on March 5, 1936 to the late Sylvester and Marea Scheffler in Port Huron, MI. She died on November 8, 2019. She married Thomas H. Hicks in 1956; they were married for 48 years.
Betty loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener, a “walker” of her Haslett neighborhood, and was the top cookie deliverer to the children in the neighborhood she encountered along her way.
She especially loved being part of the Haslett Community Church family. Betty was with the church for nearly 50 years, served on several church committees, and was a member of the church choir. Some of her best times were spent with her fellow “crazy” choir friends.
Betty was a patron of the arts her entire life. She especially enjoyed the musicals and plays that the Haslett High School Music and Theater departments presented each year. Watching many of her friend’s and neighbor’s children perform in these events was something she thoroughly relished. Betty earned an Associate Degree in Art Education from LCC and assisted in teaching young children how to draw and paint. She produced many Pen and Ink drawings (her specialty), watercolor paintings, and a few oil paintings throughout her life. Many of her drawings were proudly given to friends and relatives as special gifts for weddings, anniversaries, and other occasions and many were donated to WKAR for the annual fundraising auction. Each year, her hand made Christmas cards were eagerly anticipated by all who would receive them.
Betty is survived by her sons Patrick J. Hicks and Michael T. Hicks, brother Clarence Scheffler, sister-in-law Phyllis Scheffler, brother-in-law Warren Hicks, nieces Linda Olah and Erin (Steven) Franklin , nephews David (Carol) Hicks, Robert (Yvonne Boone) Hicks, James (Marsha) Hicks , and Dean Scheffler. She also had several grand nieces and nephews.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Thomas H. Hicks, who passed away in January 2004.
Caring, helpful, mischievous, crafty, stubborn, and fun are just a few words that described Betty. Although her ailments took some spark away from her the last few years, there is little sadness that can be attached to Betty’s life. She lived to the fullest each and every day.
A Celebration of Life for Betty will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday December 7, 2019, at Haslett Community Church in Haslett, MI.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to following organizations in memory of Betty:

The family would like to thank the following people for their care and support the last few weeks of Betty’s life:
The Reverend Betsy Aho from Haslett Community Church for spiritual guidance and support of our family during the time mother was hospitalized.
The Intensive Care Unit and the 2nd floor South East staff at McLaren Greenlawn for providing the necessary comfort care and for offering the support to the family for the duration of Betty’s illness. You were always there and available for everything needed.
In addition, the family would like to thank the entire staff at Bickford Assisted Living and Memory Care in Okemos, MI for providing Betty with a great place to live the last 4 years. The activities and events to stimulate her mind, the meals that kept her fed and healthy, and the patience and kindness staff exhibited when she was not her usual self were very much appreciated. You are all saints and deserve a great deal more recognition than can be provided in this short paragraph.
