Cherry L. Oppenlander, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away on August 7, 2025, at the age of 81. Born in Wiltshire, England on February 9, 1944, Cherry moved to Mason, Michigan in 1964, where she spent the majority of her life.
Cherry proudly served in the Women's Royal Air Force for two years in England, an experience she held dear throughout her life. She was known for her charming English accent, which always left a lasting impression on those she met. Her heritage was something she treasured, and she embraced her roots with pride.
In addition to her military service, Cherry had a distinguished 23-year career at Lansing General Hospital, where she earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues. She then was able to find joy in sharing her love of travel with others by owning and operating a travel agency for many years. Following her retirement, she devoted her time to passions that brought her joy, including traveling, golfing, and spending time with her close-knit circle of friends, affectionately known as her "Poker Buddies." These friendships, built over more than 40 years, were a source of immense happiness for her.
Cherry was preceded in death by her loving husband, Keith, and several siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Tara Sprague; sons, Paul (Shelly) Oppenlander and Tim (Melisa) Wagner; grandchildren, David (Christa) Sprague, Jessica (Kyle) Hinkson, Corey (Alicia) Oppenlander, and Kaleb Adams; great-grandchildren, Max, Lorelei, and Charlee; as well as her sister, Daphne.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home in Mason. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society, Ingham County Animal Shelter, or the American Cancer Society.
