Dorothy Carline (Hacker) Blue, age 87, of Mason, Michigan went to be with her Lord on April 17, 2024. The daughter of John and Lucille Hacker, she was born in Duluth, Minnesota and grew up in Melvindale, Michigan.
Dorothy earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky and taught in the Melvindale School System before she met Dennis, the love of her life. They married on August 16, 1963, at the Covenant Church in Detroit, Michigan. Dorothy and Dennis have two children, Luanne, born in 1967 and Dennis born in 1969.
Dorothy was best known for her love of God, strong will, and adventurous spirit. She was an athletic person, willing to try anything. An avid golfer, she won numerous club championships and the Golf Association of Michigan Senior Women's Championship in 2000.
In 1969, because of Dennis' work with Ford Motor Company, the family transferred overseas and there ensued 14 years living in Venezuela, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. Dorothy lost her parents in a tragic commercial airplane crash when they came to visit her in Venezuela and three months later, gave birth to her son, Dennis, on July 5, 1969, in Venezuela. She often commented, "her fondest and most difficult family memories were during those years living overseas."
Raised in a Christian home, Dorothy maintained a love of God and participated in Christian activities throughout her life. Her friendships were extensive and reached all aspects of life. Her favorite role was that as a grandparent and treasured time with her grandchildren. She also loved her favorite yellow labrador, Daisy, who she treated as a member of the family.
In the last years of her life, Alzheimer's disease diminished Dorothy's mental and physical capacity but not her vibrant spirit. Though her memory was failing, her love for family and friends remained vibrant. She will be missed by all of those who knew and loved her.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Amanda Blue and her parents, John and Lucille Hacker. She is survived by her husband, Dennis; daughter, Luanne Letarte (Pat) and grandchildren, Emilee Johnson (Jon Shea), John, and Grace; son, Dennis (Donna) and grandchildren, Carey and Dennis; brother, Ronald (Ina); nieces, Ronda and Charlynn; and nephew, John.
A memorial service for Dorothy will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Mason First Church of the Nazarene, 415 E Maple St., Mason, MI 48854.
