Howard John Meyer

Howard John Meyer was called to his heavenly home on July 1, 2026, at the age of 90. Howard was born in Hackensack, NJ, on April 15, 1936, to Dr. Howard Maurice Meyer and Flossie Becker Meyer. He was their fourth child and only son.

Howard attended Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ, then received his B.A. from Albion College and his B.S. and M.S. in geology from Michigan State University. While studying at MSU, Howard met the love of his life, Linda Carol Clarke. Howard graduated and started his career in oil and gas exploration with Texaco in Midland, TX. After Linda graduated, they got married in Farmington Hills, MI, and then she joined him in Texas; there, they began their lives together. After a few years in Texas, they were relocated to Roswell, NM. While in Roswell, they welcomed Fred and Sue, the first two of their four children.

A short time later, Howard began working for the New Jersey Zinc Company and moved his family to Palmerton, PA, where their two youngest children, Sally and Andy, were born. While at New Jersey Zinc Company, his proudest accomplishments were the hydrostatic level he built and the work he did during his trip to Sierra Leone. While still employed by the New Jersey Zinc Company, Howard and his family were then transferred to Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. During their few years in Canada, Howard was proud of the backyard ice rink he built, and maintained, for his children, providing a perfect spot where they could practice their ice skating. Mississauga served as his home base while he traveled deep into the bush country of Northern Canada, conducting seismic surveys. These rugged trips gathered essential data, but they also provided Howard with a lifetime of great stories. He loved to recount his wilderness adventures, like the time a fish mistook his finger for a worm and latched on while he was simply rinsing his toothbrush in a stream.

When he decided to leave New Jersey Zinc Company, he got a job with Michcon, and the family moved once again, but this time to Lake Orion, MI, followed a few years later by Worthington, OH. Their final move came when Howard accepted a job at Dart Oil and Gas in Mason, MI, and he moved the family back to Michigan from Ohio. He finished his lengthy career in the oil and gas business at Dart Oil & Gas. After he retired, Howard continued to work as an oil and gas consultant and as a landlord for the four student rental homes he and Linda had bought in East Lansing, MI.

Howard and Linda found their church home at Eden United Brethren Church. After Linda’s passing in 2008, Howard became more involved in the church's extra activities, such as Bible studies, and volunteering for many years as a timekeeper for the Upward Bound Basketball organization. At the age of 83, Howard rededicated his life to the Lord and shared his faith and belief when he was re-baptized.

Howard spent his last few years in an apartment where he continued to share his faith through his love of singing hymns. His main interests while in his apartment were Bible studies, singing hymns, and birdwatching. He also loved his pet bird, Tweety. Together, Howard and Tweety would watch and whistle to the Lawrence Welk show, and Louis Armstrong in the evenings.

Howard and Linda were always devoted to their children and grandchildren; their family was everything to them. They were so proud of the accomplishments of each and every child and grandchild.

Howard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Clarke Meyer; his parents, Dr. Howard M. Meyer and Flossie Becker Meyer; his sisters, Marjorie Warrell, Marilyn Heid, Elizabeth Stoner; his brothers-in-law, Ronald Clarke, Rodger Clarke, Jack Warrell, Donald Heid, and John Stoner; his sister-in-law, Nancy (Lange) Clarke; his niece, Sherry (Heid) Jaycox; and his nephew, Mike Warrell.

Howard is survived by his children, Frederick (Silvia) Meyer, Susan (Bradford) Fitch, Sally Meyer (Nevon Clark), and Andrew (Amy) Meyer. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Amanda, Ryan, Justin, Alexandria, Renee, Benjamin, Joshua, Emma, Andrew, Jacob, Thomas, Lan, Finn, Han, Austin, Lele, Cassie, and Sophie.

Visitation gathering will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home - Ball Dunn Chapel, 621 S. Jefferson Street, Mason, MI 48854, on August 14, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

The celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 1 PM at the Eden United Brethren Church, 1938 Eden Road, Mason, MI 48854. The family will gather at the church to greet friends beginning at 12 PM until the service.

After the completion of services, a luncheon and fellowship will follow at the church.
