John was born on April 17, 1962, in Lansing, Michigan, to James and Mary Morelock. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School and built a career in the automotive industry, where he worked as a car salesman and later managed an auto body shop. John was often described as a people person and was a gifted salesman who could sell just about anything. John had a deep appreciation for music. He enjoyed playing and collecting guitars and, in his younger years, sang and performed in a band. A natural on the acoustic guitar, he had an exceptional ear for music and could often hear a song once and play it by ear. As young boys, John and his brothers spent many hours playing guitar together. Hearing him play and sing was a rare privilege for those lucky enough to quietly listen. He also had a lifelong interest in astrology and enjoyed keeping up with the latest on the stock market and politics, always eager to learn something new. A devoted Michigan State fan, John also had an eye for a well-tailored suit and a great pair of shoes. Those who knew him remember his quick wit, infectious laughter, and spirited nature. He was full of spunk, loved to laugh, and had a way of making people smile. John loved his parents dearly and often spoke fondly of his upbringing and the years his family spent around Michigan's GM automotive industry. He was kind to his caregivers and brightened the lives of those who cared for him.
John is survived by his daughter, Brandy Benson (Norman) of Potterville, Michigan; six grandchildren, Bentley, Bailey, Barrett, Bennett, Badrick, and Blythe; his sister, Pam Helton of Eaton Rapids; his brother, Ken Morelock (Kathi) of Delton; his sisters, Patti Marriott and Laura Hernandez, both of Eaton Rapids; his nieces and nephews, Amanda Morelock, Matthew Marriott (Amanda), Meghan Marriott (Fego), and Anthony Hernandez (Brittany); his great-nieces and great-nephews, Lillana, Levi, Maverick, Kamdin, Kabrie, Ruthie, Evalyn, Joanna; as well as extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ruth Morelock and James Howard Morelock; his brother, James Stanley Morelock; his brothers-in-law, Todd Marriott and Eddie Helton; and his niece, Emmalee Morelock.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Cognilive, who have become John's adopted family over the years. Special thanks to Heather Futch, CEO; Laurie Kilmer, his case manager; Kathy Gaydos, his guardian; and caregivers Yolanda, LaShawn, Jermaine, Eric, Nicholas, and Ms. Shirley for their compassionate care, friendship, and unwavering support.
Reflecting on John's life, Heather shared, He was a butterfly that couldn't be held down. Those words beautifully capture the free spirit that so many experienced in him. John will be remembered for his love of music, his unmistakable laugh, his free spirit, and the unique mark he left on the lives of those who knew him. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
