Phil was born on September 11, 1953, in Lansing, Michigan, to Delores May "Pat" (Roberts) Baker and Joe Phillip Baker. He grew up in Mason, where he graduated from Mason High School with the Class of 1971. During his school years, he was active in both football and music—two passions that would remain with him throughout his life.
Following high school, Phil began a career with General Motors that spanned more than 30 years. He worked at Fisher Body, the Powerhouse, and the Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant before retiring in 2008 at the age of 55. He was known as a hardworking, dependable man who took great pride in providing for his family.
In 1978, Phil married Cindy Shepard. Though their marriage ultimately ended, Phil's great joy in life came in the form of two sons. In 1991, he found lasting companionship with his life partner, Janet Briggs. Together they shared more than 35 years of love, friendship, and even a little chaos.
Music was one of Phil's greatest passions. He loved playing and writing songs, and those who knew him will remember the joy and creativity he poured into his music. He was also an avid sports fan who loved football and baseball, enjoyed working on cars, riding his Harley-Davidson, fishing, feeding and watching birds, gardening, and spending time at his cabin in Roscommon. He was also a proud member of the Eagles in Mason.
Phil was a kind and caring man, a devoted father, and someone who always stood firmly by his convictions. He could certainly be stubborn, but that stubbornness reflected the determination and resilience that helped him overcome life's challenges. Beneath his tough exterior was a generous heart and a deep love for his family. He leaves behind countless memories that will continue to bring smiles to those who knew and loved him. He was truly hardworking, musical, and unforgettable.
Phil is survived by his partner, Janet Briggs of Roscommon; his sons, Jeremy (Melissa) Baker of Eaton Rapids and John (Ashley) Baker of Charlotte; his stepchildren, Brian Briggs and Amanda Roberts; his beloved grandchildren, Alison Baker, Aubrey Baker, and Olivia Baker; his siblings, Karen Vallance (Gary Smith) Kaye Maddix (Dave Maddix), and Scott Baker; along with numerous nieces and nephews including Brigette Kristine Inchaurigo, Cory Baker, Casy Baker, Sam Maddix, Amy Maddix-Roznowski, Brittney LaBean, Ethan Baker, and Sadie Baker.
