Robert L. Dunigan-Wirt
June 13, 1936 – April 24, 2014
Robert L. Dunigan-Wirt, age 77, passed away peacefully at home with his loved ones by his side on April 24, 2014. He was born June 13, 1936 in Chippewa County, MI. Robert honorably served in the US Air Force from August 26, 1956 until October 1, 1976. He was a Vietnam veteran, and retired as a Master Sargent. Robert traveled around the world many times. Upon his retirement he worked for McDonald-Douglas and spent 5 years in Saudi Arabia. He owned and operated a nursery and gardening business in Austin, TX. He was also employed by the Austin Statesman Newspaper as a branch manager. Robert loved camping, hunting, fishing, nature, and being outdoors. As an avid fisherman, he was known to many by the nickname “Pikeman.” He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Wilma I. (Goodell) Dunigan; adoptive parents, Karl A. and Irene E. (Foster) Wirt; and his sister, Sandra (Dunigan) Clifford. Surviving are his loving wife, Mary B. (Hodgson) Wirt; children, Kim (Patrick) Doody, Karla (Glenn) Wissen, Robert L. Dunigan, Cheryl Davis (Jeff) Baldwin and Richard M. (Susan) Wirt; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard L. Dunigan; many in-laws, nieces and nephews; and many old and new dear friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Ball-Dunn Chapel, 621 S. Jefferson, Mason, MI with Pastor Cal Hodgson of the United Brethren Church of Dansville officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to the service at the Ball-Dunn Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Lansing, 4052 Legacy Parkway, Suite 200, Lansing, MI 48911; or, the American Cancer Society, 1755 Abbey Road, East Lansing, MI 48823 in memory of Robert L. Dear Mary and family, I am very sorry to hear of the passing of my uncle Bob. Even though I did'nt know him well, my mom and him had just reconnected in this life just months before her passing ,he was there for me and lended support to a niece he really never seen except perhaps when I was a child.So for that I am very grateful ...and can just imagine the loss you,family and friends are feeling.so please accept my condolences at this time and thank you for remembering my mom in his slideshow as well. Bob will be greatly missed. He and my dad have been friends since they were young men.
Bob would take me Pike fishing several days every summer for the last few years. Enjoyed hearing his stories while we fished. Every one knew Bob at the lake.

Bob made everyone smile with his stories of the world and about his life in the U.P. He always had interesting tales to tell. He loved to chat but even more he loved Mary. He made her so happy. What a sweet man to take such good care of her. Bob you will be missed more than you know. Thank you for the memories. R.I.P.

Bob--You brought such happiness to everyone who was lucky enough to have met you. I know you are not in pain any longer and Heaven is rejoicing to receive you. I will miss you forever.
