Robert L. Dunigan-Wirt, age 77, passed away peacefully at home with his loved ones by his side on April 24, 2014. He was born June 13, 1936 in Chippewa County, MI. Robert honorably served in the US Air Force from August 26, 1956 until October 1, 1976. He was a Vietnam veteran, and retired as a Master Sargent. Robert traveled around the world many times.
Upon his retirement he worked for McDonald-Douglas and spent 5 years in Saudi Arabia. He owned and operated a nursery and gardening business in Austin, TX. He was also employed by the Austin Statesman Newspaper as a branch manager.
Robert loved camping, hunting, fishing, nature, and being outdoors. As an avid fisherman, he was known to many by the nickname “Pikeman.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Wilma I. (Goodell) Dunigan; adoptive parents, Karl A. and Irene E. (Foster) Wirt; and his sister, Sandra (Dunigan) Clifford.
Surviving are his loving wife, Mary B. (Hodgson) Wirt; children, Kim (Patrick) Doody, Karla (Glenn) Wissen, Robert L. Dunigan, Cheryl Davis (Jeff) Baldwin and Richard M. (Susan) Wirt; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard L. Dunigan; many in-laws, nieces and nephews; and many old and new dear friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Ball-Dunn Chapel, 621 S. Jefferson, Mason, MI with Pastor Cal Hodgson of the United Brethren Church of Dansville officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to the service at the Ball-Dunn Chapel.
