CHARLES H. CASTLE passed away on 11/21/20 and was cremated so he could have his memorial service in 2021 after covid restrictions. The Funeral mass will be Friday September 3rd, 10:00 am at St Francis of Assisi Church, 6850 Mayfield Rd. Gates Mills, OH 44040. Immediately following will be his burial at All Souls Cemetery, 10366 Chardon Rd in Chardon, and at noon will be his Celebration Of Life luncheon at St Denis Golf Club, 10660 Chardon Rd in Chardon.
Castle, Charles Herbert, age 91, born in Cleveland, Ohio (at home) to the late Frank Collins Castle and Mayme Gnuschke Castle, passed away on November 21,2020, joining his oldest daughter Cathleen Susan Gilbert (passed on 9/20/2003) and his wife Catherine Louise (Majeska) who passed on 12/17/1992.
He is survived by his children Steven (Thao), Barbara Begam (William) and Bonnie and grandchildren Katy (Stef), Betsy May (Corey), Aaron, Ryan and Jason and great grand children Cooper and Baby coming in January 2021 and many dearly loved nieces and nephews and his best friend and neighbor of 60 years Ben Madzelonka and dear friend Cindy Brunkus.
He received a mechanical engineering degree in 1952
From Cleveland State University (then Fenn College) and worked in the aerospace industry for 72 years including TRW, Cleveland State University and NASA as a consultant. He was involved in the development of the communication dish on Space Probe Pioneer 10 and 11 which took the first pictures of Jupiter.
He served in the US Army Ordinance Corp from 1954-56 where he was responsible for development and testing of guided missile arming mechanisms.
His hobbies and enjoyment besides his family were gardening and tropical houseplants which he grew in the greenhouse he built for his wife in 1964 for 60 years and then had quite a collection of his plants at his beautiful apartment in Hamlet Hills Village in Chagrin Falls, Ohio until his passing.
He loved all animals especially old dogs as he knew just the right spot to scratch behind their ears. He was an avid reader and was quite physically active taking walks up until a few months ago. He loved jazz music and the “good old days”.
His last couple of years he valiantly fought leukemia.
He was very proud to become a Catholic in 2001 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Gates Mills, Ohio. The most beautiful and treasured gift he ever received in his life was from Father Steve Flynn who managed to give him his Last rites. We will forever be grateful for this.
