Charles Paul Hurley, “Chuck,” died peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in his home in Shaker Heights, Ohio, at the age of 71. He died from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Young Hurley; two children, James and Alice Hurley; his sisters, Dr. Pamela Hurley, Vicki Friscic, and Patty Hendricks (Steve); and numerous nieces and nephews. Chuck maintained a particularly close relationship with his nephew, Jeffrey Hurley. He was preceded in death by his son, Nathan Hurley, from a prior marriage, and his brother, Jeffery Hurley.
Born June 24, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Phyllis Roberta Hurley (Campbell) and Paul Marlin Hurley, Chuck was raised in Aurora alongside his four siblings. He received a B.A. from Kent State University (1978) and a J.D. from Case Western Reserve Law School (1982).
Chuck relocated to Washington, D.C., where he led a successful career as a tax litigator. He first joined the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in 1990, where he was responsible for litigating significant tax trials involving complex disputes. Chuck served as lead attorney on two of the Tax Division’s most prominent cases: Long-Term Capital Holdings v. United States and Trigon Insurance Co. v. United States. He left the Tax Division in 2003 to join Mayer Brown LLP, becoming a partner in 2006. He ultimately returned to the DOJ in 2019 to mentor a new generation of trial attorneys before retiring in fall 2021. Chuck and his wife returned to the Cleveland area in 2023, where he spent his remaining years surrounded by loved ones.
A wonderfully devoted husband and father, Chuck worked hard to provide his family with a rich and meaningful life. Some of his favorite memories were from family trips to the Caribbean and Europe over the years. Chuck was also an avid tennis player and lifelong fan of the sport.
Known for his powerful intellect, he was famously never afraid of a debate, yet always carried a warm, friendly disposition. A Celebration of Life Service and reception will be held at The Chagrin Valley Hunt Club, 7620 Old Mill Road, Gates Mills, Ohio, on Saturday, October 17, at 11:00 a.m.
