Born November 8, 1943, in Livadotopi, Kastoria, Greece, to Athanasios and Olympia, he moved with his family to Thessaloniki during the Greek Civil War to escape the bombing and was raised there.
In 1970, he came to Cleveland, where his sister Aspasia and brother-in-law Michael lived, and began working as a machinist. He later met his wife, Georgia, bringing her to the United States in 1974. Together, they raised their daughters, Olympia and Androniki (Sam).
A hardworking and devoted family man, he rarely missed a day of work and took great pride in providing for his family and giving his daughters every opportunity to succeed. A man of few words, he believed strongly in “Όχι λόγια, έργα” — “Not words, but actions.” He lived accordingly, showing his love through all that he did for his family.
He adored his grandchildren, Alexia and Nicolas, and remained deeply connected to his Greek roots. He loved visiting Greece and family, Greek music and dancing, soccer—especially his beloved PAOK—and even a good meal at Olive Garden. Or In his words, Oliver Garden.
He was very involved in his Greek parish of Sts Constantine & Helen, where he served as the Director of the Greek School, an active member of the Parish Council and served as chaperone at GOYA basketball tournaments where his daughters played.
Another favorite saying, “Παν μέτρον άριστον,” reflected his belief in moderation and balance in all things.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Georgia; his daughters, Olympia and Androniki (Sam); his grandchildren, Alexia and Nicolas; and his sister, Aspasia Papouras (the late Michael). He was preceded in death by his sister, Freideriki Kontonikolaou (the late Kostas), and his parents, Athanasios and Olympia. He was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, quiet strength, love of family, and the values he passed on to the generations that follow.
The family will receive friends Wednesday September 2 from 10 AM to 11:30 AM at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3352 Mayfield Rd, Cleveland, OH 44118 where the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:30 AM. Interment to follow at St. Theodosius Orthodox Cemetery.
