WILLIAM (Bill) M. SONES, age 83, of Cleveland, Ohio passed away peacefully at his home on August 23, 2026. Beloved husband of Barbara J. Sones (Moysey) for 56 years, dear brother of John R. Sones, Darlene J. Sones (deceased), and Richard A. Sones, loving brother-in-law of Jane Giammarco and uncle to 11 nieces and nephews.
Born in the Bronx in New York City on July 24, 1943, Bill lived there and in upstate New York until his family moved to Ohio in 1954. After studying English and mathematics at Ohio State University, he lived in Cleveland where he established a career as a freelance writer. Specializing in nonfiction articles, his work appeared in scores of newspapers and magazines worldwide, including Chicago Tribune, Miami Herald, South China Morning Post, Gulf News, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cincinnati Enquirer, Reader’s Digest, and Family Circle. In the 1990s he transitioned to writing weekly newspaper columns, first “Numbers” (coauthored with physics professor John McGervey) and then the offbeat, internationally syndicated “Strange But True” (coauthored with his brother Richard and wife, Barbara). The “Strange But True” column ran for 25 years and Bill’s favorite items were eventually collected in the 2006 book “Can a Guy Get Pregnant? Scientific Answers to Everyday (and Not-So-Everyday) Questions” which was translated into seven foreign languages.
With Barbara’s unwavering devotion, Bill was able to continue writing and enjoying life even though severely afflicted with multiple sclerosis.
