"Quiet thunder".  Thats how i describe one of the most significant men in my life.  

I met John Velotta in the summer of 1972 prior to my first year of high school.  I had decided to attend Gilmour Academy  which had more of a reputation as a smart kids school as opposed to a sport oriented school which i desired.  I was caddying at The Country Club and sitting in the caddy shack watching the caddy's  play cards.  I weighed 98 lbs and I was sitting next to a  pretty big kid. He introduced himself as John Velotta and we started a conversation.  I asked what high school he was going to and he said I'm in eighth grade going to Gilmour Academy next year.  I couldn't believe it and from that point on my perception of Gilmour was changed.  That was the luckiest day of my life.  

We played football, basketball and became very good friends.  Our fathers attended each game and they too became friends.  Mr. Velotta was as much a presence on the sideline as my own father and his words of wisdom were very important to me.  You always knew he was there.  Mr.Velotta didn't say a lot but when he did speak, his words were important and inspirational.  One of the things i always looked forward to  hearing him say was, " good game Chucky" and when i heard it, it was like being hit by thunder.

Inspirational, heart, trust, honesty are words to describe the man who raised John Velotta.  I chose John Velotta to be the best man in my wedding because he is the best man I know and he is a reflection of the best man he knows, Mr. Velotta.   Mr. V's belief was to leave everything you had on the field whether in sport or in life.  That heart is what inspired John and what inspired me and anyone else that knows John.  

I was happy to have the opportunity to tell Mr. Velotta what he meant to me a few weeks ago and to hear his thunderous voice say "thank you, that means a lot"  I feel privileged and blessed to know John,  Mr.Velotta and the entire Velotta family.  They are each very special in their own way and you can see Mr. Velotta in each one of them.  Quiet thunder! He didn't have to say much but when he did speak you listened and it affected and influenced and always in a profound and positive way.  

Mr. V was a listener and an observer whose memory have guided me in decisions I have made and in how I live my life.  I thank god for giving me the opportunity to have known him. I still feel his presence just as I did when playing football at Gilmour with the only difference being that I'll never hear those thunderous words, "good game Chucky".   

The last words I did hear  Mr. V say were, " I'm tired, I'm going to sleep now".  Its ok  Mr. V, rest well because  you made your mark, you changed the world and my life for the better and just as you preached, you left it all on the field.

Chris and family, very sorry to hear about your father's passing. I am glad i got to meet him at the hospital recently, and i hope i was at least help him out a little bit that day in getting him settled in to the hospital. Sounds like he was a great man. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Mr Velotta would have have loved the party- seeing all the people he loved and loved him.  He's at peace now, and you will all miss him dearly.  But he's doing fine, and is in a good place
