Andrew J. Alpers passed away peacefully on Monday, December 24, 2012 at the age of 82. He was born in Bangor, Maine on May 6, 1930 to Dr. Jacob and Mrs. Dorothy Nathan Alpers. Andy spent his early years growing up on the campus of his father’s employer, a psychiatric hospital, and the stories he could tell! He was a high school wrestler, a Navy retiree, rugby player, journalist, public relations man and a Miami High Stinger by marriage to Linda Glance Rosenblatt Alpers. His memorial service was held at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels on December 26 and inurnment will be held after a military service at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida at a future date, when he will join his wife to be together again. A journalism scholarship has been named in his honor by the South Florida International Press Club, an organization for which he was a past president and treasurer and a tireless committee member of the scholarship program. He would have been very honored and pleased. He leaves behind his loving family, daughter Lisa Alpers Gerardo, stepdaughter Susan Rosenblatt Sands and stepson Michael Rosenblatt, their spouses, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many friends and former colleagues. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Habitat for Humanity, 3800 NW 22 Avenue, Miami, Florida 33142. Farewell to you, Andy, you were loved and will be missed.

It has already been a week since my stepdad passed from my world and since I was able, for the last time, to make his life a bit easier. In my mind, it's well past time to check in with him to be sure he's okay. Now, I can only think about him and wish him well. It is my hope that by now he's with my mom and can once again be the vibrant soul he was in life. Thank you to each of you who have expressed your fondness and condolences for this very caring and fiercely independent man. Go Buckeyes, Dolphins, Hurricanes and Tridents and congratulations to the journalism student who earns his dedicated scholarship. I'll miss you, Andy.

So many great memories of Andy. He was definitely one of a kind. The Rugby World and The Tridents RFC would have been much diminished if he had not been a part of them. Safe travels good sir. Until we meet again in the next life.

Andy was a great Trident, a great friend and a great personality. You always knew when Andy was around either on the pitch or at the bar. By the way I am still pissed off at Andy for making me replace him as Trident president. But I suspect beers were involved. Jerry Garcia put it best - May the Four Winds Blow You Safely Home. Have found myself thinking of Andy since returning to the Tridents side lines this season and participating in the Fort Lauderdale/Boca Raton old boys match last month. I recall Andy attending Tridents home matches and socials when I joined the club in '86. Andy made the new guys (even referees) feel welcomed.

What a great man, friend, and team mate! It was an honored to have known, shared many drinks, and bled with him on the rugby pitch as a member of the Miami Trident Rugby Football Club. Andy, I have way too many great memories for you to ever leave my thoughts. RIP MY FRIEND!
