I was very sorry to hear of Andy's passing.  Our families were very good friends growing up in Maryland.  We lost contact when he moved to Florida.  We played tennis together, basketball together, vacationed together.  I have great memories.   I did try to reach out to Andy one time when I was in FL, but I never heard back. I knew Andy years ago as part of a loose group consisting of guys including Murray Epstein, Danny Levin and others. Occasional gatherings at Sally Russell s across from the Dade Courthouse and around town.  I was known to the group as 'Digger' as my former summer job was as a gravedigger.  Fun group of guys. I only just learned of Andy's passing in reading the In Memoriam section of the Florida Bar Journal.  With delayed condolences

I only learned of Andy's passing the night before his funeral, and it has taken me a few days to recover from the shock and gather my thoughts.  I wanted to just add my own personal anecdote about the kind of person Andy was:

I met Andy by phone back when I was representing the cruise lines. He represented a family in a personal injury case, and we of course would occasionally confer about discovery issues and what not. He was always very cordial.

One day, we were discussing something about the case when, out of the blue, he said that he had heard that I was a bass player. "I am," said. "Do you play?" (The naivete of that question gives me a chuckle, in hindsight.)

He told me that he had a band that was looking for a bass player. I agree to show up for a rehearsal to audition.  I immediately fell in love with "The Fit" - Andy, "Doc" Joel, and Mare being the core members - and played with them for a good five years before begging off to focus on my career. What a mistake!

Andy was not just a really terrific, dedicated, and professional musician, he was a wonderful human being who never had an evil word for anyone.  I never would have guessed that I could become such good friends with an opposing attorney (I eventually handed Andy's case off to another attorney in the firm), but Andy made it easy. 

I regret that I wasn't a better friend to Andy in the years that followed my departure from The Fit. I had recently been thinking about him, and wondering how he was doing, when I received the shocking news of his passing.  

My heart goes out to Judy and the kids, and all others who knew Andy and loved him.  Just know that the world really is a better place for having had Andy in it. 

from cousin Larry waks. cousin Andy was always my favorite relative growing up. Visiting in Bethesda with His mom and dad and sister Nancy. Shared times on cape Cod  , his move to Miami, sailing , conferences , always laughing playing music together. , law stories. My son Andrew was in part named after you ( as per the weirdness in our family of everyone having the same name )You will be so missed I am so sorry I couldn’t make it from LA for the funeral. Thoughts, condolences  and prayers for the family. 


I was sadden and shocked to read of Andy's premature passing. I enjoyed listening to Andy"s wit when we would cross paths at the courthouse. He was one of the top maritime lawyers in the country. Whenever I had a question about maritime law Andy was my mentor. He was truly one of the "good guys" in and out of the practice of law. I will miss his humor and the twinkle in his eyes when we talked.

Will always remember our times on White Heat, the sailboat that couldn’t race right😊

Andy was a true champion for his clients and was a leader of the band of brothers and sisters who also represent "they who go down to the sea in ships".   All of us left behind will miss him dearly.   

Will very much miss our dear neighbor Andy.  He was so cheerful, talented and walked more miles in our neighborhood than anyone else ! We will keep him in our heart forever.
