
Florence was born in Brooklyn, NY, lived for many years in Syosset, Long Island, and moved to Miami in 1968. When she was 48, she decided to go to college. She attended Miami Dade Junior College, FIU, and earned her masters in social work from Barry University. She opened her own private practice and with her sorority sisters in Phi Lambda Pi Honor Society, she spearheaded the establishment of a women’s shelter that is still going strong. She was active in the Temple Zion sisterhood and choir; she played the mandolin; she was named to Who’s Who of Women in America; she loved to entertain and her home was the location of most family gatherings. She loved her cats, five generations of orange tabbies all named Puddy, and her Cavalier Spaniel, Lady.
The past two years Florence lived at the Palace Rehabilitation and Nursing Home of Kendall where she received excellent and compassionate care. Her final days were eased by care from Vitas Hospice.
Florence was married to Martin “Berby” Wasserman who passed away in 1989. She also outlived her son, Barry, from London and her two beloved sisters and their husbands, Rae (Saul) Green and Lynne (Lee) Martin all of Miami.
Florence is survived by her two loving daughters, Rhona (George) Montesinos of Miami who was her devoted caregiver for 20 years, and Lorrie (Ray) Wasserman Gonzalez of Miami and Atlanta; her grandsons, Wolf, Jack, and Luke Wasserman of London and Jamie Wasserman Downing of Miami and Denver, and her nieces, Veda Levin of Miami, Dorinn Rodman and Adrienne Levinthal of NY, Cheryl Slotkin of D.C. and Ilene Wasserman Taylor of PA.
