Idaz Greenberg
February 5, 1931 - September 1, 2023
Miami, Florida - Idaz Greenberg (née Zasloff), 92, artist, illustrator, author, designer, tropical gardener, world traveler, matriarch and maven, loosened her tenacious hold on her remaining spark of life, dying gently and peacefully on September 1, 2023 in the Miami, Florida home she designed.
She was preceded in death by parents Anna and Julius, brother Alfred Zasloff (Judy), daughter Simba Greenberg, husband Jerry Greenberg and his parents Ben and Lillian, sister Rhoda Schwartzman, brother-in-law Hyman Schwartzman, sisters-in-law Sali Greenberg and Florence Zasloff, and brother-in-law Richard (Dickie) Greenberg (Sally).
Her legacy lives on in devoted son Michael Greenberg (Leda), grateful daughter Mimi Young (JD), darling grandchildren Emperial Young, Jeremiah Young (Emily Guhde), Nina Lindsay (Jacob), amazing great-grandchildren Shayna and Joslyn Lindsay, and godchildren Farren and Travis Miller.
Her many nieces and nephews absolutely idolized her. Sisters-in-law Judy Zasloff Lakind (Paul) and Sally Greenberg, and brother-in-law Frank Greenberg (Judy) still remember her with love.
Talented in just about any media, Idaz was best known for her work creating marine life publications with pioneering underwater photographer Jerry Greenberg through their publishing entity, Seahawk Press. Writing, designing, and illustrating, she authored over 30 publications, illustrated the innovative waterproof marine life ID cards (Fishcards) that still sell throughout the world, designed and printed a charming line of tee shirts (much of the above still sold by their son at Fishcards.com), and designed a line of dresses that sold in Burdine's - all while raising three children, and always looking fabulous. Later, "Brownie" (as she was known) enjoyed ballroom dancing and fashioning gorgeous concoctions from thrift store finds.
Idaz mentored many artists and had dear friends who counted on her wise counsel, intelligence and humor, and she was considered a second mother by many. Some of her most treasured friends are Marie Wood, Lisa Wood Richardson (George), Lyn Wood (Carol), and Jo Wood-Rader (Brian). Special artist friends who will miss her dearly are Rusty Miller, Rheid English, and Charles Bernstein.
As she declined, extremely kind and caring people made Idaz's final years beautiful. Foremost are her caregivers, who fell in love with her just like everyone else: Frédérica Mentor, Françoise, Rose, Josée, Stabencia, the magical Jeannie Lindquist, and lovely Lisa Renee Lindsay. There could be no greater gift than such compassionate, capable, and loving care.
Service at noon on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, followed by graveside interment at Riverside Gordon Mt. Nebo Kendall, 5900 SW 77 Ave in South Miami, Florida. In lieu of flowers, please post a remembrance at the legacy page and secure her place in your life and your heart through appreciation for her talent, charm, and the difference she made throughout her 92 years.
