Jean Sara Mechlouitz Lewis, age 91, went to Heaven 27 October 2017. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Jean came to Miami when she was 16 to attend the University of Miami. She was a loyal member of the University’s family her entire life. She earned three degrees from its School of Education. She taught at the University’s Reading Clinic for 40-plus years, excelling in teaching all ages to love reading. A strong believer of life-long learning, Jean enjoyed discussing both local and world events with her many friends. She loved beautiful gardens and spent many years enjoying Fairchild Garden’s wondrous beauty and its special events. In tribute to both her dedicated years to the University and her love of nature, a Tribute Bench was dedicated in her honor by the Herbert family. Jean is survived by her devoted daughter, Dr. Elisah Lewis. Preceding Jean to Heaven were her beloved mother and father, Hattie and Jacob Mechlouitz, and her sister and brother-in-law, Hinda and Joseph Freyer. Jean, a lifelong member of Temple Israel, believed in God’s miracles. Family services were held at Lakeside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Fairchild Garden in her memory.
