Greenberg, Murray Austin (73), passed away peacefully on December 31, following a long battle with lymphoma. A devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Murray lived his life surrounded by love.
Professionally, Murray was a leader who played a central role in shaping Miami-Dade County and the local legal community. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Murray devoted almost his entire career to public service in over thirty-five years at the Miami Dade County Attorney's Office, serving as both County Attorney and, before that, First Assistant County Attorney. During his career, he handled cases and provided guidance on some of the most significant matters in South Florida's history, including the lawsuits surrounding the 2000 presidential election. Murray provided direct and candid advice to the County's leaders, developing a sterling reputation not only for his legal knowledge, but for his unflappable integrity and honesty. Murray often considered his greatest accomplishment to have been his decades of mentorship for the younger lawyers in the County Attorney's Office, many of whom have gone on to leadership roles of their own. He further mentored young lawyers in his decades as an adjunct professor at the law schools of Florida International University, St. Thomas University, and the University of Miami.
Regardless of his professional success, Murray's main love and focus was always his family. His 48-year marriage to Phyllis was a perfect relationship in every way. Murray was most proud of his sons Benjamin and Gerald; his daughters-in-law Anna and Maya; and his six grandchildren: Avigail, Ariella, Yonah, Eitan, Adi, and Dafna, all of whom live in South Florida and filled his life with joy. Murray was also blessed with his wonderful brother, Dr. Joel (Carol) Greenberg of Savannah, Georgia, and many loving nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
A memorial service will take place at Bet Shira Congregation, 7500 SW 120th Street, Pinecrest, Florida, on Monday, January 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Lakeside Memorial Park.
