I worked for Dr. Spil in Naples, Florida for many years - and I will always remember him with fondness he was a great neurosurgeon but more importantly a great human being!  RIP - Dr. Spil you will be missed.

I was very sorry to hear of Sam's death. Sam was definitly one of the best physicians and largest personalities of an entire era of medicine in Naples. Those who knew him in Naples will never forget him.

Sam & his family were among the first people I met when I moved to Naples 40 years ago. We shared a wonderful friendship that survived through the years. I'll always remember the fun times we shared, including real Cuban feasts at his home on Harbor Drive.Even though we hadn't seen each other often since he moved to Miami, Sam will always be in my memories and in my heart.

I knew him as Uncle Mulque (his name that his parents & my parents always called him).  He was my father's brother.  They were two brothers that shared an amazing bond.

Uncle Mulque had a zest for life, loved his cigars, was a great singer and had a heart of gold.  There was always a smile on his face for you.  

He was brilliant; an outstanding neurosurgeon.  Our family was so proud of him for all of his accomplishments.  He was our go-to-doctor for any type of medical issue.  He always listened and offered his knowledge and wisdom.

To know him was to love him.  He holds a special place in the hearts of the lives of the people he touched. 

A wonderful man who will forever be in our hearts.

Sam was the surgeon who hired me twenty years ago.  He taught me "colorful" cuban phrases and how to drink strong espresso.  But Sam was, by far, the best neurosurgeon I ever met when it came to selecting patients to treat and who not to.  He was amazing.  He had a gift.  To this day I still quote Sam.  It was an honor and privilege to have known and worked with him.

When Wendy and I arrived in Naples in 1973, the first doctor we met was Sam. He invited me to share office space with him and he would pay the rent and overhead and salaries of staff, due to my being without funds. He did so, and would not accept repayment when I could afford to pay him back. He performed a laminectomy on me in 1974, major surgery at the time, and invited me to play tennis with him 5 days later, which I had to refuse. Sam was a guy who would give you the shirt off his back whether you asked for it or not. A great human being. I am so sad to hear that he is gone. God bless him and his family, past or present.
