Selma Judith Baum Abelson was born in Barberton, Ohio. Her parents were children of farmers who settled in Western Canada in the 1880's. After graduating high school with honors, she attended Ohio State University where she was a member of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority. In 1949, she married Jack Baum and lived in Ashland, Ohio until moving to Dade County in 1955. She was a member of Temple Beth Am and active in the Lorber Charity. Selma returned to college in the 1960's and earned her B.A. and Masters in Education.
Selma taught Political Science, English, and History at Glades Middle School for 20 years. She served as department head of Social Studies and was awarded Teacher of the Year at Glades.
After retiring she married Bernard Abelson and moved to Pembroke Pines where she was a member of the Villages reform synagogue .
Selma was an avid reader, loved antiques and all things beautiful. She was active in politics and was invited to attend President Kennedy's inauguration in 1960.
Playing Bridge was her favorite pastime , having attained the level of Life Master .
The highlight of her life was her 3 sons their children and grandchildren. She had very high standards and great expectations .
Selma wanted her legacy to be a close, well educated and loving family.
She is survived by her three sons Dr. Richard (Susie) Dr.Mark (Gloria)and Dr.Michael (Dr. Merika) Baum, 6 grandchildren Elissa (Jeff), David, Dr. Melissa (Patrick), Samantha, Eric and Bryan, 2 great grandchildren Mitchell and Lola Eve. Her husband Bernard Abelson .
She also leaves behind her beloved sister and rock , Charlene and brother-law Sid Tuchman and their 3 children whom she was very close to, Mitchell (Darin) Ellen ( John)and Kathy (Mike) and their children.
Selma was a great friend to many, she was beautiful, caring and witty, and she will be greatly missed.
