Sheldon Ronald Schwartz

The Honorable Sheldon Ronald Schwartz, 76, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2020 at his home in Aventura, Florida. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda of 49 years, son Brett Schwartz (Jennifer), daughter Stacy Magadov, four grandchildren Lauren, Ellie, Ryan & Caroline, and cherished K-9 companion Tara.

Shelly was born in the Bronx, NY on February 10, 1944 to Rea and Max Schwartz and grew up in Westchester County, New York. He received his undergraduate degree from Monmouth University and earned his law degree from Suffolk University Law School before his admission to the New York Bar in 1969. He was subsequently admitted to the Washington D.C. and Florida Bar and moved to Miami to practice law in 1971.

Shelly may be most remembered for the 27 years he practiced as a criminal defense attorney followed by 16 years serving his community as a County Court Judge in Miami-Dade County until his retirement in 2012.

Shelly was very active in his community. He often rolled up his sleeves and planned special events at the Children’s Home Society. He was also heavily involved in organizing the annual Law Day celebration at both the Hialeah Courthouse and the North Dade Justice Center. He took great pride in this annual day of national dedication and reflection of the principles of government under law. Shelly was passionate about providing real world training for the lawyers of tomorrow and frequently offered his perspective as a “guest judge” during St. Thomas University Law School mock trials.

Shelly was larger than life and had a heart of gold. He was well-respected and known for his fairness, knowledge, generosity and quick wit. He loved bright colored ties and abstract art. He was a cigar aficionado who relished classic cars, absolutely adored animals and was always entertained by a lively debate. He was a son, husband, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed. He will be in our hearts forever.
