Suzanne Shochet, 83, a native New Yorker and longtime Miamian, passed away from complications of Alzheimer's Disease on April 23, 2018. After a brief hiatus in Destin FL, Bronx-born Suzanne Joy Hertz moved with her parents Irving and Bertha Hertz and younger brother Ronnie to South Florida, where she graduated from Miami Beach Senior High and attended the University of Miami. Following a brief marriage and early divorce, Sue supported her young children with a career as both a legal and executive assistant. Her life's second and most significant chapter began when she met Fred K. Shochet, publisher of The Jewish Floridian Newspaper, at an event at the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged. As both devoted wife and business partner, Sue improved the paper's financial footing and ultimately focused on the paper's expansion to other markets, earning the title of Executive Editor in the Floridian's final years. In their private life, Sue loved traveling with Fred and children (especially cruising) and, on land, lavished her nurturing on growing roses. A founder at Mt. Sinai Medical Center and the Miami Jewish Home, Sue moved from her own home in Bay Point to Hazel Cypen Tower on the Jewish Home campus in 2008. Predeceased by her beloved Fred and younger brother, Sue is survived by daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Reidar Andersen, of Cooper City, upon whose constancy she depended, and son and daughter-in-law Mark and Betsy Popkin, of Marietta, GA. Although Sue's health declined, her smile and positive personality remained intact; and, she was cared for tenderly and respectfully by her loving, compassionate aide, Neva Grant. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 AM, April 25, 2018 at Mt. Nebo Miami, immediately followed by a memorial/celebration of life at the Miami Jewish Home/Miami Jewish Heath Systems. Shiva will take place beginning at 5:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday, April 25th and 26th, 2018 at the home of Sharon and Reidar Andersen, 5270 SW 121 Ave, Cooper City.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Memory Center at Hazel Cypen Tower, at the Miami Jewish Home/Miami Jewish Health Systems, 5066 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida 33137, ATTN Leslee Geller, In Sue Shochet's memory, or to the Alzheimers Association for research, alz.org, in Sue Shochet's memory, will be greatly appreciated.
