AJ Guthrie, known to family and friends as Jim, passed away at the age of 91. Born in Nashville, Georgia, Jim lived a long and full life, marked by hard work, independence, service to others, and a deep love for his family.
Jim built a long career as an accountant, working for Blue Cross, Florida Farm Bureau, VyStar, and the State of Florida. He approached his work with dedication and spent many years contributing his skills and experience to the organizations he served.
Jim was a modern-day cowboy at heart. He loved hunting, fishing, and riding horses, finding happiness in the outdoors and a sense of freedom in the saddle. His love of horses also gave him an opportunity to serve his community as a member of the Atkinson County Search and Rescue Horse Posse. In that role, he assisted law enforcement in searching for missing persons and escapees, as well as conducting large-scale ground searches for clues and evidence in unsolved cold cases. It was a meaningful way for Jim to put his love of horses and the outdoors to work helping others.
Jim enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, including good Mexican food and listening to Ranchera and Bolero music. He was a quiet and steady presence, a man who did things his own way. He never needed to be the loudest person in the room to make an impression. He followed his own path, lived according to his own values, and remained true to himself throughout his life.
But for all of Jim’s independence and quiet strength, there was one thing that could always bring a special light to his face: his granddaughters. He absolutely adored Lily and Harper, and he lit up whenever he saw them. They held a special place in his heart and were, without question, his favorites. The joy they brought him was unmistakable, and the love he had for them was one of the most treasured parts of his life.
Jim is survived by his former wife and friend, Sarah; his son, Brennan; his daughter, Heather; his son-in-law, Vince; and his beloved granddaughters, Lily and Harper. The family they shared remained an important part of Jim’s life, and the friendship he and Sarah maintained is a meaningful part of their shared story.
Jim leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will continue to hold him close in their hearts. He will be remembered as a hardworking man, a devoted grandfather, a horseman who gave his time to help others, and a modern-day cowboy who lived life on his own terms.
His journey may have come to an end, but his legacy lives on in the family he loved, the people he helped, and the memories of a life lived his own way.
