Auren "A.J." James Frei, 85, of Middleburg, Florida, passed away on March 17, 2026. Born on November 26, 1940, in St. Paul, Minnesota. A.J. will be remembered as an adventurous, devoted, hard-working, loyal, and wise man whose steady presence and love for family and country shaped the lives of all who knew him.
A.J. developed an early interest in history, collecting World War I and World War II memorabilia—an interest that reflected both curiosity and deep respect for those who served.
A.J. proudly served in the United States Navy for over 22 years, achieving the role of ASCS Air Support Chief Senior. His career took him all over the world, and through his service he modeled dedication, discipline, and patriotism. He also instilled in his children what it means to love and serve one’s country.
A.J is preceded in death by parents Phyllis (Barrot) and Thomas Frei; brothers; Thomas and Patrick; and sister Judy. A.J. is survived by loving and devoted wife of 37 years, Carolyn (Wilson) Frei; children Mary Beth Martin (Paul), Tom Frei (Kara), Jim Frei, Bill Frei Robert Frei (Crystal); and bonus son Mitchell Claxton; sisters; Janine and Joyce as well as 9 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A.J. found joy in the simple and meaningful pleasures of life: fishing—especially ice fishing at his sister’s house in Minnesota—woodworking, and the freedom of the open road while riding his motorcycle. Bitten by the travel bug, he greatly enjoyed traveling and, above all, being with family.
A Graveside Service will be held Friday, April 10, 2026 at 10:30 am (arrive at 10:00 am to Lane 1) at the Jacksonville National Cemetery located at 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Pastor Rick Crews to officiate.
