Born and raised on Jacksonville’s Westside to Carl and Nell Nolan and graduating from Baldwin High School in 1970, Barry was a lifelong resident and public servant, serving a 30+ year career with the City of Jacksonville’s Streets and Drainage and Construction divisions, working his way up to the position of Road Supervisor before retirement.
Following his retirement, Mr. Nolan felt the urge to stay busy and helpful. Coming out of retirement multiple times, he first joined up with Callaway Contracting, working his way up the ladder to eventually become the company’s Director of Safety. Following his time there, he and his daughter started Nolan Services, a homegrown yard and home maintenance business. Eventually he made his way to the Road Rangers, staying active and continuing to help others right up until June of this year.
Mr. Nolan was a long-time active member of Evangel Temple Assembly of God, and saw the church grow from a small, unassuming congregation into one of the largest churches in Jacksonville.
Through the years, Barry had many hobbies. He loved being outdoors, and enjoyed fishing, swimming, sports, and vegetable gardening, among many other interests.Taking up SCUBA diving, he eventually became a Divemaster and SCUBA Instructor, getting the family involved in the process. When it was time to relax inside, he enjoyed cooking, reading, and playing cards with friends and family. More than anything, his biggest hobby was spending time with his family. He didn’t care what the activity was as long as his loved ones were there with him.
Barry was generous to a fault, often known to do without so others could have what they wanted or needed. He was happy to be able to share his knowledge and skills with anyone with a desire to learn, and always kept an open door (and open kitchen) policy for friends and family. He was extremely proud of his Native American heritage and his family’s status as one of the original groups to settle in the Whitehouse/Baldwin area.
Like many Nolans, Barry was renowned for performing feats of strength throughout his life, using his power, reflexes, and speed to become a star linebacker at Baldwin. He was once witnessed throwing a grown bull on its back, and it wasn’t uncommon to see him grinning as he walked over and effortlessly lifted an object two others had been struggling to move.
Mr. Nolan is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, numerous aunts and uncles, and younger brother Johnny Nolan, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Cheryl Nolan; three children, Stacey Renae (Lenny) Dingman, Tracey Lea (Darby) Hipps, and Barry Carl Nolan, Jr.; granddaughter, Jocilyn Raelen (Antonio) DeLua; siblings, Anthony, Guy, and Peggy; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is irreplaceable and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services will be held at Evangel Temple Assembly of God 5755 Ramona Blvd, Jacksonville, FL. 32205, Saturday November 19, 2022, beginning at 1:00pm.
Flowers may be delivered to the church until 4:00pm on Friday November 18, 2022.
