Bernard (“Bernie”) Nelson Johnston passed away Friday August 21, 2020 at the age of 74. Bernie was born in Carrollton, IL and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1968. Bernie retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer with 22 years of service. His duty stations included Brunswick, Maine, Rota, Spain, and NAS Jacksonville as a crewman aboard P-3 Orion aircraft and as an instructor. Following active duty, Bernie continued to serve the Navy through civilian contractors. Bernie served his community as a coach, mentor, and leader in many capacities, from sports to his church. Bernie was an active member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Orange Park from 1974 to 1987 and St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Middleburg from 1987 until his passing. Bernie volunteered with Catholic Charities at St. Luke’s as well as being a member of the Knights of Columbus. Bernie enjoyed motorsports, including annual birthday trips to the Gator Nationals, soccer, and woodworking. Bernie is survived by his wife of 52 years Barbara Jean Johnston, his mother Hilda Johnston, brother Todd Johnston; his three children Matthew Scott Johnston, Christopher Neal Johnston, and Melanie Johnston Bennett; and seven grandchildren, Amber Alexis, Stephanie Jean, Shadrach Christian, Tristan James, Elena Noelle, Ronald Isiah, and Keira Sydney. Interment Service will be held 10 AM, September 11, 2020 at Jacksonville National Cemetery with Military Honors.
