Born on July 6, 1939, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Carl was a hardworking man deeply connected to his Pennsylvania roots. He dedicated 30 years of his life working as a skilled wireman for Asea Brown Boveri before retiring in 1999. Carl was known for his strong work ethic, kind heart, and steadfast commitment to family and friends.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Barbara Ann Makarsky; daughters Denise A. Azevedo, Diana L. Makarsky-Hixson, and Dawn A. Himmelwright; grandchildren Charles R. Beveridge Jr., Cassandra M. Beveridge, Aaron B. Azevedo, and Katherine E. Hixson; and great-grandchildren Charles R. Beveridge III, Cameron A. Beveridge, and Harper Azevedo.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, John S. and Bertha Makarsky; siblings John Makarsky, Robert Makarsky (Shirley), Mary Jean Dalicandro (Frank), and Barbara Ann Slivensky (Albert); as well as his beloved sons-in-law Vincent M. Azevedo, Devin D. Hixson, and Thomas C. Himmelwright.
A man of deep Catholic faith, Carl was also a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan—so much so that he named his dog Ben after his favorite quarterback. He found great joy in simple pleasures: fishing, tending to his garden (where he proudly referred to himself as a self-taught expert), and especially spending summers in Virginia Beach. There, he loved fishing off the pier and relaxing with Barbara on the deck overlooking their favorite night spot, Ocean Eddie’s, all while listening to his favorite local band, The Snards.
Carl also enjoyed charter fishing trips, always embracing the peace and adventure of the open water. Yet above all, his greatest joy in life came from being a grandfather and spending meaningful time with his family.
Carl will be remembered for his warmth, sharp sense of humor, and the unwavering love he gave to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
