Catherine Matthews

Catherine Elizabeth Matthews peacefully left this life at home, surrounded by her loving family on February 26, 2013. Catherine was born in her great-grandmother’s farmhouse in Columbia County, PA on November 13, 1922. At age 20, Catherine moved to Miami, FL. There she met, fell in love with, and married a U.S. Navy sailor, William E. Matthews, Jr. They had three children and traveled extensively.

Catherine loved the outdoors, fishing, crabbing, and gardening. She thoroughly enjoyed the activities and the dear friendships at the Weigle Senior Center in Middleburg, FL. Catherine was a Certified Nurse’s Assistant for many years. Her biggest job was being a loving, caring and nurturing mother. Mamma was a lamb, gentle and kind.

Catherine was predeceased by her husband, William E. Matthews Jr., son, Edward John Matthews and grandson, Edward John Matthews Jr. Catherine is survived by her brother, Wilford Hampton (Lancaster, PA); her loving children: Kathaleen (Keith) Bouet (Middleburg, FL) , Daniel Matthews (Manchester, TN) and daughter-in-law, Janet Matthews (Florahome, FL); her grandchildren: Jennifer Matthews Fosdick (Norman, OK), Kristen Matthews Leeds (Albuquerque, NM), Kristopher Harris (Middleburg, FL), Helen Matthews (Florahome, FL) Sean Matthews (Florahome, FL), Laine Matthews (Manchester, TN), Michael Carr (Oklahoma City,OK) Michael Carr (Oklohoma City, OK); great grandchildren: Sebastian Harris (Middleburg, FL), Nichole Rajala (Albuquerque, NM), Eddie W. Wudarzewski (Albuquerque, NM) Keaton Brooker (Palatka, FL); great-great grandchildren: Melody Wudarzewski (Albuquerque, NM).

A memorial service will be held at the Weigle Senior Center at later date. Catherine’s ashes will be interred at Jacksonville National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send donations in Catherine’s memory to the Weigle Senior Center, 3916 Section Street, Middleburg, FL 32068.
