George was the son of George L. Childs Sr. and Mattie Juanita Childs. He graduated from high school in Maryland and attended college before serving in the Army National Guard.
In his early twenties, shortly after marrying his wife, Chris, George moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he began his full-time career. He started in wholesale distribution in the food industry and, after approximately ten years, transitioned into the third-party logistics industry. He built a career in sales and marketing with a mid-sized Central Florida firm, a move that brought George and Chris to Orlando, where they settled, raised their son, and continued building their life together.
After becoming empty nesters, George and Chris returned to Jacksonville. George took on a new role as General Manager of a regional third-party logistics company, where he spent several years. He continued his career through various sales and consulting roles before eventually retiring.
George and Chris spent more than five decades together, and much of their life was centered around home. They enjoyed the simple routines of being together—taking care of their home, working on projects around the house, maintaining the yard, and settling in together to watch whatever new Netflix series had captured their attention. They did not need to be constantly on the go to enjoy life. Their home and the time they spent together there were an important part of their life as a couple.
Outside of work and home, George enjoyed being outdoors and staying busy. In his early years in Jacksonville, he spent time fishing on the St. Johns River and eventually developed a love of fly fishing. He enjoyed deer hunting, often traveling to Alabama, where his mother was born and where members of her family continued to live. In Florida, he also enjoyed quail and dove hunting.
George was a hands-on person who enjoyed working on things himself. He spent many hours improving his home, maintaining the yard, fixing things, and piddling around the house. He had a natural interest in mechanical things and enjoyed working with his hands.
One of those interests became a shared father-and-son project when Brian was younger. George and Brian spent considerable time together maintaining and restoring a 1966 Ford Mustang. The project gave them many hours working side by side and reflected George's enjoyment of cars, mechanical projects, and figuring out how things worked.
George remained in Jacksonville for the rest of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George L. Childs Sr. and Mattie Juanita Childs.
George is survived by his wife, Chris Childs; his son, Brian Childs; his sister, Pat Bardzik; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A small private service will be held by the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in George's name to the American Heart Association at www.heart.org
