On Friday, July 5, 2024, Maggie Lue Valentine transitioned to her eternal home with the Lord. She was a warrior in every sense of the word. For seven years, she fought cancer with grace, strength, determination, and a personality that drew people to her. She never complained or wanted people to feel sorry for her. She understood the assignment and fought until the Lord called her home.
The daughter of the late Bennie Lee Walker, Maggie was born on December 3, 1944, in Dougherty County, Georgia. She attended school in Albany, Georgia, and eventually migrated to Brooklyn, New York, where she continued her education. Brooklyn was also where Maggie met her closest friends, fell in love, raised her children, and set roots that are still strong today. For many years, Maggie worked as a Home Health Aide, a job she took pride in. But when you asked her what job she enjoyed the most, her face glowed when she talked about her work with the developmentally disabled. She would go on for hours about what she learned, the people she met, the adventures she had, and how the clients meant so much to her.
Maggie enjoyed cooking and baking. Her specialty was homemade bread and cakes. She also enjoyed celebrating the holidays with her family. This was when she could love on her family while cooking and baking. She also enjoyed listening to music. Maggie would spend hours listening to Mahalia Jackson, James Cleveland, Shirley Caesar, Ruben Studdard, the Clark Sisters, and many others. Music was her way to relax and just be free. Add all of the above with a good western, and Maggie would have a great day!
While cooking, baking, music, and westerns brought Maggie happiness, her children brought her the most joy. Maggie’s children were her world. She would always say her children were her friends, sisters, brothers, and cousins. Everything she did, every plan she made was for them. She taught them to enjoy life as she did and never to let anyone stop their dreams. Her love for her children was so great. This love spread to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Maggie, lovingly known as Betty Jean, Ms. V, Mema, and Betty Betty will be missed by so many. When you met her, you couldn’t help but love her. Her sense of humor would keep you laughing, her sternness kept you in line, and the love she poured on you made you feel special. There will never be another, and we were beyond blessed to have her.
Maggie Lue Valentine was preceded in death by her son, Melvin L. Valentine (Bear), and grandson, Edward Ellison Jr. (Eddie). She leaves to cherish her loving memories: four daughters, Christine Valentine of Brooklyn, NY, Sandra Valentine of Bronx, NY, Ebony (Marvin) Valentine of Middleburg, FL, and Dorothy (Ivory) Bailey of Middleburg, FL; one son, Darrin Valentine of Brooklyn, NY; nine grandchildren, Victorian Seldon, Lawrence Seldon, Monique Seldon, Hakima (Antonio) Coleman, Amanda Valentine, Darrin Valentine Jr., Nakiya King-Bailey, Ivory Bailey Jr., and Yazmyn Bailey; two great-grandsons, Jaylin Seldon and Amari Coleman; four great-granddaughters Salem Seldon, Nature Seldon, Solana Coleman, and Celine Coleman; a host of cousins, friends, and bonus children.
