Mamie Louise Champion (née Smith) was born October 18, 1938 in Athens, Georgia to the union of the late Mr. & Mrs. Horace and Consvilla “Pam” Smith. On Saturday morning, October 22nd, Jesus quietly called his child home. Mamie will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Mamie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age as a member of New Dorsey Tabernacle in Athens, GA. Mamie met her high school sweetheart, Leonard, and they married August 8, 1968. From their union, they had two children. Mamie worked as a dental assistant until retirement. Mamie spent most of her life in Athens, but she and her husband moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 2021 to be closer to her daughter.
Mamie is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horace and Pam Smith, brothers Mr. Horace Smith Jr., Mr. Willie Frank Smith, and Mr. Sherman Lee Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved husband, Leonard Jr. Two sons, Mr. Jeffrey Smith (Kalamis) and Mr. Demaurio Flanigan, both of Athens, GA. Daughters Mrs. Keisha Scruggs (Bryant) of Orange Park, FL and Gwen Jarrells of Athens, GA. Four Grandchildren: Jalen Smith of Athens, GA, Peyton Rucker, Brynn Scruggs, and Bryson Scruggs all of Orange Park, FL. One niece Mrs. Donna Whiteside of Augusta, GA. Three nephews Mr. Horace Smith of Lexington, GA, Mr. Barry Heard (Kim) of Detroit, MI and Mr. Rodney Smith, of Athens, GA. Two aunts Mrs. Dorothy Sewell of Athens, GA and Mrs. Catherine Sewell of Nicholson, GA. And a host of extended family and friends.
Family will receive friends 5-7 PM Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Holly Hill Funeral Home, 3601 Old Jennings Road, Middleburg, FL. Graveside Services will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Holly Hill Memorial Park. Please post words of comfort at www.hollyhillfunerals.com.
