Barbara Austin Winters, 88, of Charlotte NC, went to be with Jesus on November 19, 2020. Barbara was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Barbara was born in Charlotte NC to the late Croson and Ruth Austin. She graduated from Central High School. She married the love of her life W.L. Winters Sr. (Roy) in 1952. She loved him wholeheartedly until he went to be with the Lord in 1994. Barbara is survived by son; W.L. Winters Jr. “Lee” (Sandy) of Beavercreek, Ohio and daughter Diane Martin (Kenny) of Charlotte NC. Additional immediate family includes five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many other adoring nieces, nephews and close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Croson and Ruth Austin, husband Roy Winters, sister Laverne McMillan, brother Gene Austin, and her grandson Joshua Kenneth Martin.

Barbara retired from Employers Mutual Insurance Company after 33 ½ years of service as a Senior Underwriter. After retiring, she loved traveling with Roy and close friends, volunteering at Green Memorial Baptist Church, working in her yard, and spending time with her family. She loved being involved in family events and looked forward to visits, phone calls, and any outings loved ones took her on. An immense part of her care was by her daughter Diane whom she loved deeply. Diane sacrificed many hours and days unselfishly to meet the needs of her mom. Our family would like to thank Paula Harkey for her love, devotion, and friendship to Barbara throughout the years. A celebration of Barbara’s Life will be held on November 23, 2020 at the McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel in Mint Hill, NC at 12:30 PM. Graveside memorial for family and friends will immediately follow at Sharon Memorial Park.

Masks and social distancing are required for all in attendance. The service will be available via Facebook Live on the McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel Facebook page for those who cannot attend.

Condolences may be offered online at www.mcewenminthillchapel.com.

I worked with Barbara at EMC (Kelleher & Associates) when I first got out of college. She was a great help to me and I will always remember her kindness.
I am so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful person.

Dale and I loved Barbara so much! We both have many fond memories with her. The entire family has been a part of our lives in one way or another for 35+ years and we sure cherished Barbara's friendship as well as all of them. So grateful she's not in any more pain and now with Roy and her siblings and parents, plus others she loved. Now are together again. Love them all! Her legacy has impacted many!! The family is so close and inseparable, such a joy to be around. Praying for all of you as you walk this journey. Our hearts breaks as we will not be able to attend the service in person Monday but will be celebrating her life with you online. Grateful we're able to be with you online!

Love and prayers,
Dale and Kris Shields

Roy and Barbara were our youth group leaders when Brenda and I were teenagers. They were such role models to both of us. As a boy being raised by a single Mom, I was starved to meet good men in good marriages. Roy was one of my “composite fathers.” Our marriage, inspired by theirs just passed 53 years November 5th! Thank you Barbara and Roy for all you contributed to us! Love you so much! Enjoy your reunion in Heaven!

Barbara was a wonderful friend to my family. As my dad aged, she kept an eye on him at Green Memorial. He loved the way she slipped small loaves of homemade bread to him as she walked to her pew. I have a picture of my mom, sister and me greeting Barbara and Roy at their wedding. Warm memories.
