You could not miss him. His personality, his big smile and deep voice resonated whenever he entered the room. He was never shy but could put shy people at ease. He loved people and was a natural at getting them to smile. His sense of humor was infectious.
Helius Wong died unexpectedly early Tuesday morning. He will be missed by his wife, Nancy, his daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Robby Virnelson, his mother, Lin Hing, his father, Chow Wong, brother, Sam Wong and sisters Rose Wong and Pax Trucks, as well as many other extended family members. Bing-bing, his cat - she adopted him a few years ago - is going to miss him terribly.
Helius was born in Hong Kong and lived there until age 17, before heading out alone to the U.S. with just $1,000 in his pocket. He met the love of his life, Nancy, working at her parents’ restaurant in New Orleans. He was persistent and she admired his “very kind heart” and “willingness to help others without expecting anything in return.” They married 33 years ago and along the way came his daughter Melanie, whom he dearly loved and encouraged to be the compassionate person she is today.
In 1997, Helius became a U.S. citizen – he was very proud to be an American and felt he lived “the American Dream.” He strived to do the right things and by all measures, he was a successful businessman and member of his community. He attended Winthrop University. He owned Gordon International Import and Distribution, a family-owned business for 30 years. He became a licensed real estate broker. He was a board member for the St. Dak Temple of Florida and former member of the Mint Hill Rotary Club.
He was a beloved long-time member and board member at Pine Lake Country Club for 20+ years. He loved being with his buddies and belonging to the Antiques Road Show, OMEGAs, the Wednesday Junior golf groups. The twice-a-year Billy Bob golfing trips were never dull when he was around.
So dear friend, your family and friends are going to miss you. You were one-of-a-kind and a unique force in our lives. You were a good man. We hope to see you in the next life.
There will be a Memorial Service for Helius Wong, this Friday, July 17th at 3:00 pm at the McEwen Funeral Home in Mint Hill, NC. Face masks will be required.
