Dorothea Fleer George Schuch, 92, passed away on September 26, 2018 at her home, Plantation Estates in Matthews, where she had lived for 23 years. Dorothea was born on October 5, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Joseph A. George and Dorothea Franciska Johanna Justina Fleer. Dorothea grew up in Chicago and graduated Chicago Christian High School and then in 1947 from Elmhurst College. In 1948, Dorothea married Charles J Schuch and enjoyed 50 years together until his death in 1998. She taught school, raised 2 children and went back to substitute teaching as her children grew. In 2003, she married Frederick Richard Miles and they were together until his death in 2006.
During her life she was an active member of First Church of Lombard, IL; Bower Hill Community Church (Deacon) in Mt Lebanon, PA; Davidson College Presbyterian in Davidson, NC and for the last 23 Years, Matthews Presbyterian Church in Matthews, NC. She was a member of the AAUW, and the Southern Club of Pittsburgh, she served as a girl scout leader and spent many hours volunteering at St Clair Hospital in Mt Lebanon.
Dorothea enjoyed knitting, playing the piano and watching sports. All who knew her were keenly aware of her Pittsburgh Steelers and UNC Tarheels. Her joy was always in being a mother first and in teaching. Her caregivers and nurses were loved and mothered as they cared for her needs. She was extremely grateful to each of her caregivers, especially Sheryl who was with her for 14 years.
Dorothea is survived by her daughter “DeeDee” Dorothea Karen Lisenby and her husband, Terry; her son Dr. Douglas Robert Schuch and his wife, Cynthia; and her two special nephews, David and Robert Hagens and their families.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Edith Hagens and brother, Louis George.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at OakBridge Terrace, Plantation Estates on Wednesday October 3, 2018.
