Dorsey Wilson McIlroy went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 6, 2016 at the age of 88 years. He was born on June 4, 1928 to Charles Dorsey McIlroy and Sue Wilson McIlroy. Dorsey married Ella Grace Ingram on November 4, 1956.
Dorsey was a grocer in his father’s store on the corner of 8th street and Brevard Avenue in Charlotte, NC. Later he built and operated Wilgrove Superette in Mint Hill, NC. Many people in the community knew him and the children would ride bicycles to his store to purchase bubble gum and Slushes.
Attending the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in Linville, NC was a highlight for him each summer. Participating in the Grant Clan and proudly wearing his kilt made in the Grant tartan brought him great joy. He was very proud of his Scottish heritage.
Dorsey attended Charlotte College, which is now known as UNCC. He was an alumnus of Harding High School and enjoyed the class reunions. He was a member of the Matthews Masonic Lodge and a member of Wilson Grove Baptist Church for many years where he served as Deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sibling Carolyn Richardson. Surviving to carry on his legacy are, Grace, his wife of 60 years, Susan (Dave) Headrick of Houston, TX, Rebecca (Timothy) Brown of Mint Hill, NC; Lori (Tommy) Calhoun of Charlotte, NC. Grandchildren: Ryan Headrick (Denise), Jessica Dilley (Adam), Matthew Brown (Brianna), Benjamin Brown (Megan), Stephen Brown, Tommy Calhoun and Phillip Calhoun and three great grandchildren.
