He was predeceased by his parents, Denly Franklin and Lelia Kinard Miles of Columbia, SC, sisters; Mary Emma Miles Huggins of Chesterfield, SC and Lois Miles Ready of Columbia, SC. Doug is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda Petty Miles, their children, Michael Miles and Allison Roach (Landon), and grandchildren, Morgan, Kaitlyn, Michael, and Miles, all of whom he adored.
Doug graduated from Lower Richmond High School in 1960 and from Palmer Business School in 1964. In 1965, Doug married the love of his life, Linda. For the next 56 years, they would share a life filled with joy as they treasured each day together.
Doug served 20 years in the US Naval Reserve, retiring in 1980. For over 51 years, Doug was a general contractor who took immense pride in his work. He owned and operated Miles Builders for 12 years. In addition to his family, his greatest joys came from service to his church and community.
A longtime member of Idlewild Baptist Church, Doug was a deacon for more than 40 years, enjoyed traveling on mission trips, and served as Chairman of the church’s Building Committee. Doug was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple.
For several years, he served as a committee member for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, the first and oldest all-star high school football game between North Carolina and South Carolina, then held at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. Doug was proud to serve an organization that benefited Shriners Hospitals in their effort to provide care for children who are crippled or burned regardless of their families’ ability to pay for services.
Doug’s love for his family, church, sports, and country were never ending. He was a passionate supporter of Charlotte 49ers Athletics and loved attending basketball, baseball and football games. A bucket of popcorn while enjoying a game with his family always put a big smile on his face.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 24, 2022 from 10:00am to 11:45am at Idlewild Baptist Church 12701 Idlewild Rd, Matthews, NC 28105. Services will follow at 12:00pm. Doug will be laid to rest with military honors in Mint Hill, North Carolina.
