OBITUARY

James Alan Griffin

January 4, 1956February 17, 2021

James Alan Griffin, age 65, of Charlotte passed away on February 17, 2021.

He was the son of Buford D. and Carmen Long Griffin of Mint Hill, NC. He attended Elizabeth Elementary School in Charlotte, The Matheny School in Peapack, NJ and graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte. He attended Central Piedmont Community College, as well. Throughout his life, he worked for many years as a volunteer at Discovery Place and was employed as an associate at Copy Matic. Alan was always very proud of his work as a volunteer and of his contributions to the business at Copy Matic.

He is survived by his brother, Jan Griffin of Charlotte; his sister and brother-in-law, Melba and James Aberson and his nephews, Aaron and Nathan Aberson of Atlanta, GA. Michael Robinson was his friend and caretaker from 2001 to the present. His life-long Best Friend was Samuel Query of Charlotte.

Faced with daunting life-long disabilities, Alan had an indomitable spirit and a fierce determination to not let his disability define him nor limit his activities. Alan’s attitude, infectious personality and impish sense-of-humor inspired and uplifted all of those with whom he came into contact and positively influenced many people. He had a passion for cars and music. One of his favorite conversations with any person was to ask about their vehicle of choice, and his customized vans were among his prized possessions.

Alan was at his happiest in the company of others, or talking on the phone with his immense circle of friends and family. The number of family, friends, co-workers and professionals that contributed to the quality and happiness of Alan’s life on a day-to-day basis is too great to acknowledge, and the family want all those who interacted with Alan to know that they gave him great joy and contributed to his feeling of independence which he so cherished.

The family is eternally indebted to all for their compassion and kindness to Alan throughout his life. The immediate family hope that the impact and memory of Alan’s spirit, determination and love will continue to be present in all of our lives.

I remember Alan and Sam together at Marion Diehl center. We we were part of a pre-school for hearing impaired pre-schoolers. Alan and Sam would entertain the children with rides on their chairs. I always looked forward to our visits with them both. Prayers for the family.
