James (Jim) Carl Zink was reunited in heaven with his wife Anne Miller Zink on March 1, 2013. He was born May 30, 1916 in Santa Monica, California, and was the son of the late Otto C. Zink and Margaret E. Zink. He is predeceased by his sister, Barbara Z. Holloway.
Jim was a proud member of Midwood Baptist Church, Charlotte, where he served as a Deacon and Chairman of the Deacons. Following the passing of his wife, Anne, he moved his church membership to Cornerstone Baptist Church, Charlotte to be with his children. In 2008 after moving into Shad's Landing Retirement Residence, he moved his church membership to Independence Hill Baptist Church, Huntersville, closer to his residence. He was a lifetime Third Degree Mason Sparta Lodge, No. 70.
Having been raised on the beach in Santa Monica, California, Jim became an active swimmer, enjoying water sports. He also loved the mountains of California and the Carolinas. He enjoyed reading Western novels and listening to light classical music.
He was a graduate of Los Angeles Polytechnic High School and Sawyer's Business College in Los Angeles. Prior to World War II, he was employed by Marsh & McLennan Insurance Brokers.
Jim entered the Army in September 1942. He was assigned to the III Army Corp serving as secretary to several generals, the most famous being General Joseph Stilwell. He was later assigned to the Quartermaster Corp in Fort Jackson and Camp Croft, South Carolina, where he met his wife, Anne.
Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, he and Anne returned to Los Angeles. He rejoined Marsh and McLennan and enrolled in the University of Southern California to study Insurance Adjusting.
In 1948, Jim accepted an opportunity to return to South Carolina as an Insurance Adjuster ultimately joining T.M. Mayfield & Co in Columbia, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina. He was with this firm for 38 years until retirement in 1986.
He is survived by sons, James Wallace and wife, Roberta, Rockwell NC, Dennis Ervin and wife, Sheila, daughter, Robin Z Smith and husband, James Edward Smith, both of Charlotte NC. His grandsons include Jamey and wife, Crystal, Robby and wife, Amy, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Christopher and wife, Ashley of Dallas, Texas, and Nathan Smith of Apex, North Carolina. His granddaughters include Susan and husband, Travis Obermeyer, Jessica and Sarah Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina. His great-grandsons include Ryan, Caleb and Carter Zink and Peyton Obermeyer, all of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care given by his long time family physician and friend, Dr. Scott Moss. The family is grateful to the 6th floor medical staff at CMC University, and Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville for the compassion shown to Jim and his family.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, March 4th, at Sunset Memory Gardens, Charlotte, North Carolina for family and friends. Immediately following internment, a celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 8947 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his memory to Independence Hill Baptist Church, 10220 Eastfield Road, Huntersville, North Carolina 28078.
