John was born March 17, 1950, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Daniel Thomas Boone and Fay Estelle (Bair) Boone. He graduated from West Mecklenburg High School and joined the military as soon as he was old enough. John proudly served in the United States Marine Corps 2nd Force Recon from 1969 to 1974 and was stationed in Puerto Rico and Hawaii.
John really took to the island life in Hawaii and enjoyed surfing and rowing on a canoe team. He decided to stay for nine years after the military, attending broadcasting school and becoming a Disc Jockey where he could share his love and knowledge of good music, not to mention use that commanding voice of his. John also tried his hand at acting, landing scenes on Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI. John’s mother eventually told him he needed to get himself home, so back to Charlotte, he went.
On February 19, 1984, he married Lana Jeanne Wilson who was the love of his life. Up until this point, he says he had been, like the Foreigner song says, “Waiting on a girl like you,” Lana.
John was a dreamer, a creator and a hard worker. Shortly after designing and building his own house with a koi pond in the middle, John started a pressure washing company to support his family. With more than 30 years in the business, John Boone is a well-known name in Charlotte and surrounding. He worked hard until he no longer could.
John was a big man but he had to be to house his big heart. John truly cared and had compassion for people and if someone needed something he delivered. His acts of kindness were almost always done without anyone else knowing including the recipient themselves. He never wanted recognition, only to help those who needed it.
Ask anyone and they’ll tell you John was one of a kind and larger than life. He was a forever Marine wearing his eye catching USMC leather jacket with pride wherever he went. He loved to sing and play his music loud. He also liked to make people laugh. If you live in the Charlotte area, you have probably seen him out driving around with his giant fiberglass gorilla strapped to the back of his truck.
He loved people; his wife, kids and grandkids the most.
John loved being a father and did everything he could to support his girls. He was the kind of dad who sang songs at bedtime and taught them to say their prayers. In Krystle Brooke he often saw a reflection of himself as she followed in his broadcasting footsteps, going on to become an Anchor and Reporter. The two also liked to play practical jokes and shared many laughs at Lana’s expense over the years (sorry, mama). It was a blessing for John to see both his girls grow their own families and make him a Poppi to three beautiful grandkids.
John fought hard for almost two years after a major heart attack in 2019 and did not want to go, but in the end he said “Jesus had other plans.” John loved the Lord and we can only imagine he’s using his God given voice to sing with the angels.
It is clear from the outpouring of support and condolences the family has received how much of an impact John had on friends, family and those who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
John is survived by his wife Lana, his two daughters, Krystle Brooke Boone Miller and her husband Kyle of Helena, MT, Leah Fowler and her husband Michael of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Wyatt, Sabrina, and Ford; his mother Fay, and brothers, Thomas, Mark and Matt Boone. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel, brother, Donald “Donny” and sister, Cynthia.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at 3:00 PM at the McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel.
