

She was born on December 31, 1919, in Sheldon, Iowa, daughter of the late Frank & Maude Rudisill. She was raised at Nazareth Children's Home in Raleigh, NC. After graduation she attended and graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in Charlotte. She had excellent grades and this quote was written on her evaluation by Sister Mary Peter in 1941. "Quick and thorough with her work. Always generous. Mentally alert. Well groomed, cheerful and agreeable". She was a RN at Mercy her entire career, retiring in 1984. She also enjoyed her volunteer work at American Red Cross, Loaves and Fishes, Marion Diehl Senior Center and Shepherd Center.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband James Van Howell, Sr. (Bud) her parents, her siblings, Josephine, Marilyn and Jimmy, her son, James Van Howell, Jr. and a granddaughter Jamie.
She is survived by her sons, Randy Howell and wife Linda of Lake Norman,
Don Howell and wife Della of Rock Hill, her daughter Debbie Howell Thomas and husband Larry of Mint Hill, and daughter-in-law, Sylvia Howell of Winston Salem.
She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Missy Johnson, Neal Thomas, Susan Davis, Allison Reid, Amy Purser, Meredith Howell and Jason Howell. She also had 14 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Tuesday August 16th at St. Thomas Aquinas, 1400 Suther Road, Charlotte, NC at 10:30 AM with Father Stephen Hoyt, OFM, Cap officiating, and Deacon Mark Nash assisting. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to the dedicated medical staff who cared for her at Hospice of Union County.
