I got to know Mike back in the ‘90’s shooting at Stone Bay. Eventually he invited me to Thursday night at his and Sylvias house. I quickly felt at home and felt honored to be invited telling him so numerous times over the years. When I pray I always thank GOD for being so patient with me while I slowly become a better man. Mike was one of those better men that helped me to become a better man by inviting me into his circle. Rest In Peace my friend!

I met Ab about 10 years ago. It was an honor and a privilege to of been part of the Thursday Night Mint Hill Militia meetings. Learned a lot about rifles and how to shoot them sitting around the fire. It was a good time and always met good people!

IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, MIKE AND I GREW UP IN THE MOUNTAINS OF N.C. WE MEET ATTENDING ROOKIE SCHOOL TOGETHER. I RECALL HIM AS A HAPPY, FRIENDLY, CARING PERSON, AN ATTRIBUTE OF A GOOD POLICE OFFICER. I THINK WE STARTED OUR CAREERS IN THE OLD ADAM 3-4 TEAMS. I PRAY FOR MIKES SALVATION AND THAT WE WILL MEET AGAIN IN THE SERVICE OF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, JESUS CHRIST. I TRULY BELIEVE ALL POLICE OFFICERS LIVE THERE LIFE BY JOHN 3-16.

Mike and I go back to September 03, 1975 the day we first started the police academy together. We finished our career in the Baker 3 / Independence division together for the last ten years. I went to many of his Thursday night "mint hill militia" meetings on Thursday nights over the years. Every time I left he always gave me a hug and said "I love you Brother" and I will "Love you Brother" for the rest of my days.

I loved to hear Mike tell the story about the time a family were traveling thru Charlotte and a distraught father rushed up to his police car holding his young son who was choking on a toy he had swallowed. Mike put the father and son in his police car and was rushing towards the hospital. I was flying the police helicopter when I heard his call and since I was in the area I volunteered to land and pick them up and fly to the hospital which was quicker. The little boy was saved by the quick actions of Mike who worked on the boy while riding in the back seat of the helicopter. The local newspaper did a story about how the quick actions of the helicopter crew saved the little boy from choking to death. They mention our names but never said anything about Mike. He would laugh and pick at me saying he did all the work and no where was his name mentioned. He also said when we took off I banked the helicopter in a way he thought he was going to fall out. We laugh at that story many times.
What a good friend Mike was to me, he will surely be missed.
RIP Brother

Oh Michael, how I miss you.... I remember so well when we were kids, sometimes you would bring your BB gun to Grandpa Ryhne's and we would go bird hunting in the woods behind his house (you actually hit one, once!). Sometimes you would bring your bag of little army figures and would spend hours setting them up for battle. And then the time we decided to go for an adventure and got lost...we heard strange sounds and being so young we thought it was a bear or a wolf, turned out to be just a cow. We were so excited when our legs were finally long enough to make Grandpa's whet stone spin round and round... We played snake in the gully, hide and seek, red light, caught lightning bugs....oh what a wonderful childhood we had. Then we grew up and you met Slyvia, your best friend, your lover, your wife, and spent many good years together. My heart is with you Slyvia in the most difficult time of your life, remember all the good times, cherish them. Michael is on a horse waiting for you.

Mike Abernathy was many things to me. He was a career law enforcement officer, patriot, hunter, student of history, expert marksman, the best story teller I have ever met and above all else a great friend. My heart was very heavy when I heard the news of his passing but then I remembered all the great times we have had together over the past three decades. It was a pleasure watching Mike Abernathy put his unique spin on life, he was the genuine article and will be greatly missed. Rest easy Ab...your tour is done. That's my take on it.
