It deeply saddens me at the loss of a friend and longtime Mountain Rottie Rescue supporter Rick Savage.
We first met Rick many years ago when he applied to adopt a Rottweiler from us named Durango. He was one of our harder cases, 147lbs with an attitude to match.. I remember when I first spoke to him, I grilled him up and down, then when I was done, Tommy grilled him some more. After processing his application and our many lengthy conversatioms we felt he might be a good match . He seemed perfect for Durango but the real test was meeting him. Tommy and I drove to Massachusetts to Ricks house. I have to admit Rick was better then I expected, he immediately took the leash and full control of Durango. There was an instant bond between the two. Durango found a home that day and we gained a friend. After Durango passed away, Rick called me to say he was ready for another dog. I asked him which one wanted ? He said to me.." The one nobody wants" . ..that's when Otto came into his life. That's the kind of person he was, kind, compassionate and always for the underdog. He believed all dogs were deserving of a chance, he had a gift with dogs and I used to call him, the dog whisper.
Over the years he adopted 4 dogs from us, after Otto came Versachi ( hooch ) and current dog Dakota. I have so many memories I could share, funny stories I could tell. We would talk on the phone for hours about dogs, politics, music , more dogs. He was an amazing person and it has been a privleage and honor to have known him. I am still in shock that he is gone, taken from us far to soon. He will he greatly missed by those of us who knew him. We lost a friend and heaven gained an angel.
My deepest condolences to his wife Mari Cel, his family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
RIP Rick ... until we meet again, you are in our hearts and memories my friend ...
